theres a setting is on the subwoofer itself, not the AVR. It usually has 3 positions: On, Auto, Off. Auto allows the sub to "sleep" when it's not being used, and to power back up fully when it senses a signal. Maybe change to On position which would bypass that auto mode

Sounds like the amp is shoot. Never power on the amp without speaker connected.
