Hard drive disk will not spin

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs its connections to continue its cycle and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error even something as small as a faulty electrical extension or fan lead can cause you problems

computers need all of the data and electrical current to travel through every working device and to have an end to be able work properly

motherboard and a hard drive any leads between them will fail before your motherboard or your hard drive if its a flat ribbon 40 pin type IDE replace it this will be the first to fail

check all electrical power input and extensions make sure they are securely seated even the cd/dvd floppy drives need to have current go through make sure these drives are working

also check the Cmos battery and computer RAM modules make sure they are securely seated with no dust built up or in the sockets on some motherboards cmos batteries are soldered in

check you CPU make sure its securely seated and has thermal grease might be getting to hot

hope this helps you

Wd drives when plugged in

The first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/

If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva

Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations if you are happy with the results: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

I have a gateway and

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart (note after you have loaded the operating system you must go back and change the first boot device to your hard drive) The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP: The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:IDE-0 means Pri master ?IDE-1 means Pri slave ?IDE-2 means Sec master ?IDE-3 means Sec slave ?

hope this helps

Master/Slave designation is determined by jumpers on IDE drives. Most drives have adequate markings on them to identify these jumper positions. If not marked clearly, you will need the manufacturer's data to determine that designation. If you are curious about a working system just power-up in set-up mode (usually by depressing (f1-or-f2) during boot-up sequence, your system-bios will display this information for you.

I would like to use

http://www.lyberty.com/tech/hard_drives/WD_Caviar_WD400BB_specs/index.html

Above is the link to set the jumper on the 40GB to Slave.
Also, before it boots, try to get into the BIOS setting and make sure your compter can see both drives. If not, double check jumper settings for both drives. Turn off compter and change settings.

When computer can see both drives in BIOS, save it and let the compter continue to boot.

Hope this helps.

Not able to load any os

Here's a fdisk utility for you to use: http://www.shareup.com/Super_Fdisk-download-18631.html That will help partition and activate drives. If you don't know how to partition a drive, then this link will help explain, in tech detail, what you are doing: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q221829/ If you want more of a layman's explanation, then goto this link: http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/weendoggy/index.htm As the person there went into detail as to what you are doing from what I think is a not-as-technical explanation as most other sites. Fdisk wipes your hard drive clear of anything when you run it, it then partitions the drives and activates the partitions so that a operating system can be installed on it. With your RAM, why did you even try to install Vista? Vista needs at least 1G of RAM for optimal performance, not to mention a good graphics card, and just overall new hardware.

Regd the .dat file

You cannot open a data file this is only read by a programme or the operating system, but what may have happened is that you have been sent a file for which you do not have a programme for it to open with and windows has use the.dat as default. If you know who sent it and what file it is suppost to be, ask them what file it is eg a picture or video file and use one of your own programmes to open it using the right click and 'open with' method.

What is the third external connector besides the power and SATA connectors ?

In some cases an IDE connector is added to RAID Hard Drives or Industrial grade desktop computer drivers.. it's a backwards compatibility measure in case of failure. Other driver may also include an IDE power source too.. Those IDE connections are also known as (PATA) or Parallel.
