If the system you are using is a different operating system then the original, then that may be the issue.
If it is a Mac Journaled formatted hard drive, it would not show up in the Windows OS. In which you would have to do some transfer of your hard drive contents in a MAC OS to a drive readable by both. Or place them on network accessible location and copy it to your Windows Hard drive

Cannot read my maxtor in the computer

Put the bad drive back in and just like it was. Take the maxtor cd to another computer and make the diag cd. Boot your system from this cd. It's written in linux so it can boot the system. Most of the time this happens when the drive is unreadable. It's caused by the controller chip in the drive thinking the partition is gone. It will tell you to partition and format. If you get the dreaded 006 error then the drive is usless. Get the referance number it says to give the tech. If under warranty then go to maxtor site and fill out the mra forms. This is where you're gonna need the ref number. Maxtor is REAL picky about how you pack it so follow their directions.
if you don't have the cd you can get MaxBlast from their web site.

The One touch software screen isn't appearing when

Hi.

You said 'when I load' so I hope this is note is relevant but I don't find the OneTouch (Maxtor Manager) software appears when the drive is plugged in either, so I think this is normal.

You should look for an icon (a capital M within a blue disc) for Maxtor Manager in the taskbar, at the bottom right of the PC's screen.

Please try right clicking on this icon (capital M), which should bring up a window with Maxtor Manager at the top.

Then click on the text 'Maxtor Manager' to open the program's window.

Hope this is what you wanted.

Using SafetyDrill to restore to a new hard drive,

I could only find this, which you have probably followed already:-
" Step 1:
Install a new computer hard drive that is equal to or larger than your old drive. If your new drive is larger than the original drive from which you made the SafetyDrill copy, the extra portion of the new drive will not be partitioned during the system restore from the SafetyDrill copy...."

You also probably know, and I do not know if could be relevant to whether the hard drive can be recognised, that you can only restore a Safety Drill copy to a PC which in every other way is the same (i.e. consists of exactly the same other hardware). The instructions are a bit vague about the identical hardware requirement, except to say 'restore your (my italics) computer' which just implies it, but it does make sense because of all the interrelationships and drivers involved.

Apart from those considerations the questions arise as to whether the new hard drive is plugged in the same as the old one and whether it is itself working normally. It would be worth while to compare them to see if the jumpers are set in the same way, and to test it out in another similar computer.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini overview

MAXTOR MANAGER & SAFETY DRILL SOFTWARE - Clarification
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(Please also see tip 'PC RECOVERY & MAXTOR ONETOUCH 4 MINI SOFTWARE' for some more details about managing this invaluable, but problematic, software).
1.) The CD Included with OneTouch 4 Mini
- is only used as a boot disc for system restoration using 'Safety Drill' copies of a whole system
(see 5. and 6. below).
n.b. Maxtor Manager and drivers are not on this CD
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2.) Maxtor Manager
- When the drive is new, the installation files for Maxtor Manager (a set of utilies), as well as a comprehensive User Manual, are pre-saved as files on the drive itself. This is why the manual strongly recommends copying and saving them on the PC for future use. This is just in case you need to format the drive and then cannot retrieve the files to reinstall the Manager program later.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3.) Using the OneTouch 4 Mini without extra software
PCs already have the necessary drivers to run external drives so OneTouch can be accessed though its icon in the 'My Computer' window without any other software being required, and files can be copied and 'dragged out' or 'dropped in' as usual.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4.) Installation of Maxtor Manager
- Installation just requires double clicking on the 'Launch' icon, which is among the file icons on the drive itself
chas6_2.jpg
This takes you through the installation steps to install 'Maxtor Manager' on the PC.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
5.) 'Safety Drill' Copies
- These are copies of the whole system in its current state, which may be saved onto the OneTouch drive by using the 'Safety Drill' utility, which is only one of the programs in the set of utilities accessed through Maxtor Manager.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
6.) Using 'Safety Drill'
- To use it to make a copy, first install Manager and run it, then click on the Safety Drill icon in the row of utility icons across the top of each page.
In the event of a disaster, full recovery to the date of the last or an earlier Safety Drill copy can be achieved.
This is done by putting the supplied CD in the PC's drive, ensuring that BIOS is set to 'boot from CD' (the default), connecting the drive, restarting the PC to boot from the CD (see 1. above), and following the on-screen instructions to restore from a Safety Drill copy which has been saved on the OneTouch drive.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
7.) If Maxtor Manager becomes corrupt
- e.g if Manager ceases to recognise the drive, or if the list of safety drill copies contains duplicates, it is time to uninstall and then reinstall it, which usually puts things right. But see 2.) if you should wish to format the drive as well, make sure you have saved a copy of these installation files from the drive :-
chas6_3.jpg
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
8.) Diagnose or repair disk errors, & check warranty status
- Seatools
is a free diagnostic, repair, and auto-warranty checker program which can be downloaded from Seagate.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9.) To preserve the Setup Files
Installation of Maxtor Manager is performed by clicking the file marked 'Launch' which can be found amongst the setup files on the OneTouch drive itself, see 2. above. They are not on the CD which is provided.
The files can more easily be identified at first by exploring the OneTouch drive, where they remain unless the drive is formatted. It is a good idea to copy the setup files to PC because no download is available.
You could have a look in My Computer to see if the drive is accessible there.
1.) If it is then I suggest you make sure you have copied the following files from the drive and saved them on PC (to be able to reinstall Maxtor Manager if you ever want also to format the drive) :-
- then uninstall and reinstall Maxtor Manager
(for some reason this program tends to become corrupt).
2.) If this none of this helps, you could download Seatools diagnostic and repair program from Seagate to see if the drive is ok or to try to repair it.
I changed my windows to vista and then i tried to
By 'install' I think you mean install Maxtor Manager, but perhaps you have files which were saved by 'drag-and-drop' with the previous OS. These might be recovered the same way, even in Vista, if you can open the OneTouch from Control Panel. To use Manager with the OneTouch which had stuff saved via Manager with a different OS, you could first try to recover the files with Manager installed on another PC using the old OS version. Then format the OneTouch through Control Panel in Vista and with luck Manager will recognise it. If it does not, and you can see the drive in My Computer, then uninstall Manager (which might be corrupt) and try re-installing it. Regards Chas
