The Maxtor One Touch has a sensor that will keep it shut off if no power AND USB (or Firewire) is not actively connected. When you boot your computer, the unit will power UP and shut off when you power-OFF or idle your computer.

Your power cord is most lilely OK.....

Have you tried it in different outlets? Is it also connected to your computer via the USB cable while it is plugged in?

If you get no joy using the Troubleshooting Guide then try this...
You will need to check You Tube to find a Dismantle on your product and follow the step guide on here, the procedure should be similar.
Check 1st that your External HDD has an P.C. internal HDD inside, from You Tube, before dismatle of your External HDD. Connections for an Internal Laptop HDD may have same connections as P.C. not sure though.
Once your happy that it has continue reading and follow the step guide on the link below.
My neighbour has the Seagate FreeAgent Desk 500GB, and in under 2 weeks it started to beep and was not reconized by any Laptop or P.C. if this is the same for you with any FreeAgent Desk series ( not GO series, different procedure for GO products). Plug in the device and open the Maxtor software that originally was included with the device. This software may be in the form of a system manager or hard disk manager. Open the utilities section or disk utilities section of the software and choose from the available resetting, restoration or reformatting options. If you are having hard disk problems, consider reformatting the hard drive prior to resetting it, as this will improve the structural organization of data in the drive, improving performance after the restart and decreasing the likelihood of future error.
Access your drive through your computer's system utilities. This is a particularly effective method of access if your Maxtor software is not functioning properly, or if the drive is not showing up in your desktop. In Apple computers, this program is known as Disk Utility, and is found in the Applications > Utilities folder. For the Windows operating system, this utility is in the Control Panel under Disk Management. After opening this utility, choose Reset from the options and complete the disk reset. Try Repair and Reformat before resetting, as these are excellent options for the best disk performance
Contact Maxtor directly in the event of any problem where data loss is a possibility, particularly if your device is still under manufacturer or retailer warranty coverage. Maxtor may offer solutions over the phone, possibly free of charge, which may help you recover your data. Attempting a home repair often can void the warranty on these devices, so exhaust all options before performing a system reset on your external hard drive.

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Firstly why should you want to reformat the HDD is not clear to me. Anyway, since you want to do it well read on. Go to Start->Control Panel->Admin Tools->Computer Management->Disk Management. here you will get an option to manage your disks whether fixed or removable. Select Removable and select your external disk. From the right pane select the disk that you want to format and right click on it. If it is formatable (which your disk is) it will give an option og formatting. Select and follow the advice. If it does not show then select properties and there you will be able to format for sure. But remember that unless you format the HDD very many times, one can come to know that the HDD is a used one and can even retrieve the data from it. And if you format it so many times then you are reducing the life of the HDD. So the choice is yours.

return it to the previous case, open the case and replace the bent female usb.

The "physically-smaller" external hard-drives draw power through the USB cable.
The "physically-larger" external hard-drives require an external power-supply (just like a laptop requires an external power-supply).

Check the casing for a plug where the electrical power would come in; if none, then the unit will draw electrical power through the USB cable.

Goto control Panel /admin tools/computer management then **** management. There you will see your drive, right click it and choose change drive letter and paths now call it Z or whatever you choose. See if it will read now if not try plugging it into another PC. If all this fails i think a format is only option but choose quick format. 99% of data is still recoverable using recovery software. Good luck from Scott

If your harddrive still not recognized then you need to repair your harddrive.Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer then your harddrive has internal issue.

Hi,

After you connect it to your pc, it should appear under disk drives in my computer. You should be able to access it from there.

Maxtor OneTouch... | Answered on May 19, 2010

this could be for several reasons. Normally a light blinking on a hard drive is to say that the disk is being accessed. but if it happnes for a long period of time, then you might have a issue with the disk itself.

i suggest that you try the device on another PC, a friends or relatives. if you have the same problem , i am afraid that you might have a disk error

Then you need to download the drive from the internet. Hope this helps!?
