it's a simple problem...... in most cases. 11 YEAR OLD PC does the PSU fan spin, it must ! turned on. when it works? in real shop we have spare PSU in the shelf there, omg it works or not? we hot wire the PSU under suspicion. , the 1 jumper wire. http://www.pcdied.com/power.html#Jumper my guess is that works, the paper clip test I call it. so you find hat all PSU have lots of wires, sure. looking inside. the big wires matter, not the tiny if power turns on . well, the big bundle goes to the mobo. 24 pins, (see jumper above) the other cables run many things. why not just try them one at a time to see which one is shorted? easy no?, called fault isolation techniques. pull floppy power, (i bet you dont have one) pull all HDD, power. pull DVD (cd) power, or BRD. power, blue ray? if you have the VGA aux cable there,??? i cant see in your PC then pull that next , doing so will kill the VGA card dead, or it goes mad. so pull that VGA card (called an option addin card) NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS (and option DAY 1 new) if yes, best i can tell it does not have the 6 pin AUX power and means the card uses less than 75watts (flea power) then pull all other PCI or express cards. does the CPU fan spin, and is clean and heat sink clean? the VGA card too can have fan is it dead, or packed in lint. next pull ram, run no ram, the 1 stick at a time in bank 0 if all sticks work in bank 0 try all sticks, if you have 4 stick add the 1 at a time. see? is the RTC coin cell battery fresh?. they most times never last 11 years, it needs changing first. if not BIOS goes NUTS. all PCs over say 7 years, best to do that. bios nuts,= PC nuts, and owners hair falls out. now learn this, lacking spare power supply PSU diagnosis can be very very hard what if the PSU you have is weak.?

• PSU come on the following forms.
• GOOD
• BAD/ dead. ( add huge list here, ask)
• weak (yes weak happens)
• overheats fan dead or packed full of lint after 11 years never cleaned.

So when any PSU fails like this its a weak PSU or the PSU is begin overloaded.(no spare PSU?) we use a magic tool to find overloads called a AMMETER (in fact mine is DC clamp on type, super easy to use)

fans bad will wreck lots of parts from overheating. NO OS stated. is this XP.? the dead OS and virus magnet? so its wired LAN, good that is 10x more easy to get working and to help you. for sure, than wifi, (im a wifi pro and so hate it...) So first if to see if the Ethernet chip driver is missing in device manager. NOT POSTED OS IS SO WRONG. As XP drivers are pain in the ash can to find. ( i can with my tools) your PC is only 10 years old, 70 dog years. so id bet it needs new PSU (fan bad) and new COIN cell. and the missing NIC drivers, for this PC this PC came with XP ,vista or W7 the driver must match, the OS, so which is it? here Ill guess its w7 as it should be, and not the 2 other DEAD OS. ill then guess 32bits. and land you here. omg there is no NIC chip on the POS. ouch. not good that, you left off the word NOt/. and said The ethernet is on the mother board of the CAT5 jack is not there then say so. so the old slow Ethernet jack 10baseT is there. a slug slug slug port. pathetic is the words but intel.com has the driver if you need it ever go there.? better is a USB eithernet dongle new. 100x better.

This Desktop has an onboard graphics chip. Make sure you are plugging the monitor in the right place. For the nvidia, delete the Display adapter in Device Manager, reboot, make sure the system detects the video card, reinstall the driver. Re-download the correct driver for the OS you have. dont use a driver you already downloaded, it might be corrupt.

if you taking about the open slots in front top of the computer those are the memory card slots

It indicates an issue with your video display, your video card adapter might be defective

It indicates a video display error, your video card might be bad.

Some HP and Dell desktop computers motherboards and cases are not the standard design and so cannot be modified by changing the motherboard for a non-HP one as it wont fit. If you are going to change the motherboard on such a machine for a retail bought board then you may as well replace the case at the same time and re-build a new computer from the HP parts. Changing your motherboard will in effect 'de-brand' your computer anyway as all that makes it HP or whatever in terms of hardware is the BIOS software on the motherboard. go to restore HOLD the keys CTRL +F1 or f2 and enter the BIOS setup and look for to restore Factory default.Or use the software coming with the computer to administrator default.God bless you

Remove the Power Cord, Remove the the side panel on the case so you can look inside the computer. Look on the motherboard for an inscription that will say PWR for Power. Try fitting the disconnected wire into it.

The cable for the monitor has to plug into the desktop. So it's a VGA cord or DV Cord depending on the type of video card you have on your desktop. Some have a built in VGA port. Make sure you connect this to your desktop. This is the cable

speaker should just plug into the speaker jack on back of pc it will have a picture for sound the other will have a picture of mic the sound jack is green

As you have already troubleshooted a lot ... but i want you to check by replacing power-supply (SMPS) in most of the cases such problem are created by faulty smps. No doubt it's getting on but SMPS can create such problem. So check with that if haven't check for it.

first remove the cover of your computer after switching off the system and removing the power plug the power the system and see whether the processor fan is working if not power off the system and remove the 24 pin connector from the smps to the motherboard and short the green and black pin of the conector from the smps and see the smps fan is working if not replace the smps if working then remove the memory from the slot and clean them or change the memory to which match the dimm slot an connect the connector and switch on the computer

check in computer BIOS which is primary boot device for it and then check it

- Try to connect the problem monitor into different CPU to isolate the problem.
- Or try to connect a different monitor into your CPU.

- If the problem appears to be the monitor, then you may refer to the user manual of the monitor to see the required screen resolution and refresh rate of it. Then change the resolution of the computer.

- If the problem appears to be on the CPU, try to uninstall and re-install the video card driver to see if that would make a difference.

NO sir audio component are not available on graphics card. Please install the audio drivers to get the sound.audio driver c.d is available on your distributor.

possible video drivers are corrupt.Try a reboot and hold f8 key down.
When prompted choose start in safe mode,then reboot again as usual.
