E1 error
Possibility is the pressure chamber or hose (pressure chamber to sump) is blocked and the microswitch is being activated because the water is not entering the tank quick enough. Isolate from electric, remove lid and left panel (looking from the front). There is a plastic chamber bottom right of left side with two microswitches, either this is blocked or the hose that runs from it to the right and along the back of the kick panel and into the sump. Clear either or both (make sure all hoses are pushed true when repositioning). Could also be a failure with the heater or module.

The humming noise is either from the pump motor or the water inlet solenoid. One of them is stuck. Take the mopboard plate off the front of the dishwasher and look for the solenoid. It will be a cylinder with two wires attached stuck onto a box in the water line. Start the dishwasher and touch the solenoid with a finger (naturally not the electrical terminals). If you feel it vibrating in time with the hum but do not hear the water running in, the valve is stuck closed. In this case the solenoid may rapidly get hot; that's why you just touch it with a fingertip.
If water comes in and the big motor in the middle starts humming as soon as the fill is complete, then the pump is jammed or the motor bearings are frozen. You'll have to disassemble the pump (from inside the tub) to see what's going on. You should be able to freely rotate the pump impeller and the motor shaft by hand (this is inside the pump; don't confuse it with spray arm, which is spun by reaction from the water spraying out rather than a mechanical connection to the pump motor).
Another possibility is that the water fill level switch is hung up and signaling a complete water fill when the unit is still dry. If this is the case, when you start the dishwasher you may hear the water solenoid briefly, then the pump will start running immediately. Since it has no water, it will just spin at full motor speed. A quick test for this is to pour about a gallon of water into the dishwasher, then close the door and let it run. If it runs normally until it gets to the rinse cycle, then it's either the level switch or the solenoid valve. (Be sure it isn't a pump problem first or you'll have to get the water out while you can work on it!)

Put through entire cycle, standing water and
take the drain hose into a bucket and see if it pumps out.
if it does check for blockages where the hose goes to.
most likely is a blocked pump, the pump is assesable from in side the sump, you may have to get rid of all the water before you can see the cover, check instruction book.
Smell is usually caused by a warm cabinet left too long ( more than aday) with the door closed.
If your pump has been poor it could be stale water trapped in the sump.
Odor 2 days after cycle
After you have unloaded the the dishwasher, prop the door open with the upper rack out.
Let the inside air out. After a short time the remaining moisture will evaporate. Stainless steel dishwashers are prone to an odor if you do not use the machine daily. There are after market products that are citrus based that will help. Check with Bosch.
