Dear Sir:
My Acer recently locked up while using it and I had to
do a poweroff to shut it down and then started it
again. Whenit started I found that my mouse pad on the
computer would not move thecursor. I shut offf the
computer in the noraml waythrough Start several times, but the mouse
pad still does not run thecursor.
I do have
use of the computer since I have an external mouse I use atmy desk and
this works fine as it is connected through the USB port.
I would appreciate any help you may have in reconnecting my mouse pad with the cursor.
Regards,
Charlie
Hit the Fn (funtion key) HOLD it down WHILE pushing the F7 Key - this will turn your touchpad back on.
For the complete manual for your computer:

And these instructions were found on page 25.

I have Acer Aspire 1640Z notebook and I tryed to update the bios but it was not succesfully updated and power off . when I power on its give me 1 long and 2 short beeps and blank screen . How do i reset the bios thanks.
To reset the bios in a laptop you need to unplug the power supply and remove the battery. Once you do that press and hold the power button for 45 seconds then put the battery back on and plug it in and then try starting it. Everything in the bios will be reset to the factory.
Good Luck

acer aspire one 1640Z XP BIOS RECOVERY WON'T READ USB
if I understood correctly you have the recovery software loaded on a stick flash drive and you want to boot from usb to restore the pc .....There are a few things that you have to know about to do that ...
first you have to go to bios and enable boot from another device ....other than hdd /cd or flopy ... for some elder bios this isnt even a choice ..or ..if it is ,,it will be as a sub options into the hdd...choice ..
another thing that you have to keep in mind ..is that you have to disable the other options to force it boot from this one ...or ....to press f8 on boot and manually choose the usm or the stick name that will appear on boot devices...
the most important thing is that if you already formatted the hdd it does notr have a usb driver loaded and that why willl not see the device ...also the device you are using to boot ...has to be specially formatted to be bootable ....this is made ussualy with a hp format tool ...and it is explained in more than one places on the net ...just look for making a boot-able stick (usb device)
in short ...make sure the sticvk is boot-able ...second the pc ha s teh capability to boot from another device ...and this is a feature that you already enabled like first boot device ...
than things will be easy ...it will ask you to press any key to boot from the usb ...and continue like an installation from the cd ...
if you cannot do it ...I recommend using a cd ..or an image that you will ***** in a virtual cd ...for those that do not have cd drive ( use daemon tool )

how can i boot my acer 1640 laptop from usb drive (external dvd), the bios have no option. Thanks
Do you still have the problem?
In BIOS setup go to the Boot section and move the cursor down to the harddisk line.
If you started your PC with the USB device connected, the Harddisk line should have a "+" to the left.
Press enter on the Harddisk line and move to the USB.. line.
Press F6 to move it upward.
Do the same to move the Harddisk line to the top before the CD/DVD line.
Save the settings and rebootReboot, and it should boot on the USB device.
I have an Acer Aspire 1640Z, and I use a USB key to install UBUNTU Linux

Repairing laptops I get one or two a month that is locked with bios password or hard drive password.and they have always worked for me.
