MY MEMORY CARD WILL NOT LOCK INTO PLACE WHEN I
Most likely the SD card is not being pushed in far enough to lock into place. You really need to use your fingernail to push it in past flush until you hear a clicking sound, at which point the card will lock into place.
Here are full instructions for insertion and removal of the SD card: Insert the memory card with the metal contacts going into the slot first and facing up at you. In other words the SD card label should be upside down when you insert it this way. You need to push the card in past flush to have the spring mechanism lock the card into place. To get the card out of the slot, push the card in past flush and then the spring mechanism will release it. You will hear a click when the card locks into place or is released from the slot.
I have a Bushnell trailscout
Probably the first thing to try is formatting the card. There should be a function in the setup menus to do this. If it won't format or gives an error when you try the card may be incompatible. SD and SDHC cards fit the same slots, but many cameras won't work with the SDHC (high capacity) cards. Some cameras have a capacity limit, and won't work with cards that are too large (in memory terms).

Wont take pictures
If every thing is working on the cam but the camera, and your cam has a built in memory, take the memory card out. Try using cam with just built in memory. Sometimes the cam wont format right with the memory card. Don't know why, but it just happens. If this works, you'll have to get another memory card. If the cam doesn't read the memory card, it will still work, but it won't take pictures.

The sensor sounds bad. The communication seems to have a too long of a delay. Meaning it is not snapping the shot as soon as the sensor goes off.
