Trekstor hard drive, connected to power source,

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Seagate warranty check

Seagate requires both a model number and serial number to check warranty status. Once located you can check the warranty here: http://support.seagate.com/customer/en-us/warranty_validation.jsp

My trekstore ask for formatting, but I have a lot of pictures and films on it. What shall I do?

if you are referring to a corrupted usb driveclick start control panel administrative tools computer management disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now start you might tick one box then return after its finished the first repair then return and tick the second box you should not do anything while the chkdsk utility is in progress any input may damage this drive I found that you get best results by ticking one box then returning after it has finished then tick the other box If you need more help with this post a reply hope this helps you

My trekstor hard drive installation disc is for windows 98, my lap top is windows 7. how can i make this work

You cant. If your device was supported by windows 98, its a dinosaur. There would not be windows 7 drivers written for a device so old. If you can remove the hard drive from the case it is in and acquire an IDE to usb cable with a power pack to power up the drive you can read the drive that way, assuming the hard drive was formatted NTFS.
