Fan continues to run in the off position?

The contacts in the switch are welded shut (if this is a portable unit). On a central system, the fan relay contacts are welded shut.

How can I put freon

First you have to get a piercing valve and install it on the suction line. Then hook up your guages to see what the pressures are doing. If it needs freon you charge it through the piercing valve. They dont come with any access to the refrigeration system. let me know if I can further assist.

Quiet zone window unit sounds

you had the right idea - but 'coil cleaner' does not always work the best.
what I would do is 'take the unit out of the window' and wash it down really good with a water hose.
you can do this to window units without damaging them as long as you are careful to not get water in the fan motor (if there are holes in the motor casing - just cover the motor with plastic and tape).
Always be careful to not get excess water in the electrical controls but as I said - if you're careful you will have no problem.
Once the coil is clean and air can pass through the coil you should not have any problems - assuming your fan motor is running at proper speed. Note: sometimes a motor can be shorted and cause the blower to run slow hence the freezing up problem - but this is not likely the problem.
Also - it's possible that your blower has come loose from the shaft and is not moving the proper air across the coil - but again - the problem is probably a dirty/clogged coil

  • Customer was a pleasure to talk to. Had an issue with the AC not turning on. Said he had tried to plug something else into the wall socket and it worked. At this time it became clear that the relay/control board had a major malfunction. I did go through some steps for him to attempt to repair but explained most of the time these prove to not help at all. The relay alone is not sold by itself but rather in combination with the control board and they are impossible to find. Most businesses that used these air conditioners would opt to replace rather than pay the outrageous price for the control board... if one could somehow, by miracle, be located. He agreed and said he would probably just get a new AC as one like he has are not to expensive these days. I agreed and also suggested that a newer unit would also be far more economical as well as his current AC is over 10 years old. He also agreed. Customer was satisfied with my help.

I have an 12QZ22TA model.

Only an EPA certified Technician can add refrigerant. There are other possibilities why it is blowing cold air.
1. Thermostat is bad (disconnect the power, remove the thermostat, place a jumper wire on the two terminals) Unit starts to cool bad thermostat.

2. Capacitor is bad (look for oil or swelling) looks like a can with terminals.

You can test with a meter.
Instructions Things You'll Need
  • Standard multimeter
  • A/C compressor capacitor
    • 1 Turn the A/C unit off along, and unplug it from, the wall to prevent any power surge to the unit when handling the internal devices. Locate the capacitor inside the unit. Capacitors will come in varying shapes; some will look like either a round or oval cylinder with two or three power terminals on the top. Air conditioners can have two capacitors -- one for the condenser fan and one for the compressor -- and are called dual-run or dual-rated capacitors.
    • 2 Place the probes on the terminals for a run capacitor with two terminals. If the capacitor is a dual-run capacitor with three probes, connect one probe to the herm terminal and the other to the common terminal. You can check the capacitance of the fan for a dual-run capacitor by connecting the probes to the fan and common terminal.
    • 3 Turn on the multimeter and read the display screen. You will see two readings, one for the condenser fan and the other for the compressor. Readings will be in micro farads and seen as the letters "mfd" or "uf."
    • 4 Replace a capacitor if the reading is below manufacturer standards. You can find the required micro farad for the capacitor either marked on the device or in the air conditioner's installation manual. Refrain from testing any capacitor if it is leaking, has corroded terminals or the capacitor unit bulges. Replace it immediately.

My amana window ac is blowing condesation out the

There is a condensation drain on the unit that is probably plugged. It is natural for air conditioning units to produce condensation as the evaporator coil (the coil/fins that make the air cold as a fan blows air across it ) is much colder than the outside air temperature ( usually between 38 and 55 degrees depending on the unit ). There is a basin or tray at the bottom of the unit that catches the condensation as it drips off the evaporator coil, and there is a drain that allows the water to drain form the unit. If this becomes plugged the water will build up and eventually drip out of the vents of the unit. http://www.air-conditioning-and-refrigeration-guide.com/air-conditioning-circuit-and-cycle-diagram.html
In the image, air is blown across the coil in the bottom left section of the picture ( this is the "cold' coil). Condensation can form on this.
