The Amana Energystar window unit AC is displaying a E1 error code. I looked this up and it says to replace the indoor room temp sensor. It's a fairly new unit and the sensor was wiped off with a damp rag by the owner, she thinks causing this error. Replacing the sensor seems a bit extreme. Any other suggestions?

A buzzing appears when the scroll fan is running, but stops when the ac compressor comes on. It seems to have two cycles for this fan to operate, and on;y makes the buzzing sound during one of them.
