Sony RDR-VX555 Questions & Answers
SONY RMT-D240A NO LONGER WORKS,
my solution was to press enter and 1 simultaneously for 5 seconds, then press menue/system. I reset the date, and my remote worked as before. Caused by changing batteries after the remote was in storage for a year.

Sony RDR VX555 DVD/VHS Sony RMT D240A REMOTE
And that is the remote that came with the unit? That is a very bad sign... I assume you've tried a new battery / batteries for the remote? It is the IR receiver on the DVD player or the actual remote that has failed. Do you have a universal remote you can try to use with the player? It is going to be impossible to determine which has failed without some kind of replacement remote that we know works, to test with.
Unable to change the DVD 1 Command Mode back to DVD 3 (DEFAULT) SETTING
Had the same problem when I changed the factory settings by mistake. There is no "cancel" button in the remote or the set. What worked for me was to follow the directions on P. 22 of the manual and change the remote settings to DVD 1. This is done by holding the "Enter" button and pressing number 1 on the keypad simultaneously for more than 5 seconds. Then, you go back to the "Settings" screen with the "Settings" button, change the control back to DVD 3, and reverse the setting in the remote by pressing "Enter" and the number 3 this time. Remember to hold them down more than 5 seconds. Good luck!

Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Have you tried:
- press and hold the ENTER button;
- while pressing on the ENTER button, press and hold 1 for about 5 seconds;
- release;
- press SYSTEM MENU;
- change accordingly.
You may need to power OFF and then ON again after the operation.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.
Dvd get stuck 1 hour into film
There MAY be contamination of dust on the lead screw that moves the head. Be VERY careful cleaning as the head is suspended on flexures that are moved for the fine movement necessary to follow the tracks on the disk.
You might want to take this in to a repair shop and see if they can clean it.
Replacing the drive would likely cost the better part of the original cost of the whole unit.
