Fascinating. Mine only has a Cassette tape player. But no CD compartment.
Yours might be worth some money.

You will need a quality mixer with line levels. A dynamic mic may work, but I would use mixer. You should use a quality mic as the device only records and will not improve the sound of a cheap mic. A starting point will be astound $110.0 for mic.

This may not be your problem but some electronic devices have a safety switch under their service covers, usually along the edge of the case, to cut power to the unit so if an unqualified person opens it, it will lessen their chance of electric shock. If this your case, you may have this switch in the wrong position. They usually are set so that the cover will activate the switch when installed. If the switch got bumped and is swung in the other direction, reinstalling the cover won't activate this switch. I hope it something this simple. Good luck.

I had the same problem with another FM tuner. I decided to buy a different one, and in the case the one that I bought, I made sure that there were no tiny push buttons or digital displays. My point is, that after numerous problems with digital units, I find the old analog tuners to be more reliable, and no glitches. Dial knobs, real switches.

I think, on that turntable, there is a safety on the arm itself to ensure that it doesn't drop unintentionally on an album. Make sure that the safety lock isn't set. (it should pull out and push in, usually under, and to the rear of the arm)

Finally figured it out using the Service Manual (https://elektrotanya.com/sony_icf-cd815_ver.1.0.pdf/download.html). After removing the 3 screws on the bottom near the front, unhook four "claws" between the Window and the Cabinet (Upper) Block.
Then, remove 4 screws from the bottom to finish opening the rest of the Cabinet (Upper) Block. See attached picture.
