My USB power stopped.

First make sure your usb cable works fine.
Try another usb ports of computer.
Connect it to computer usb port then when you power up the computer press F8 key then enter in safe mode.
Go to device manager and uninstall all usb drivers 1 by 1.
Then restart computer then open my computer and check your driver letter.
If it is G:
then go to start menu->run type in G: then press enter.
If you are still not able to open it then right click on driver icon then click on property then tools and disk checking .Enable both check box for recover error.
If sitll not work then when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "dle" key to enter in bios then go to advanced menu and set USB legacy 2.0 enabled.
Then save settings and exit.
then check .
If still not work then connect it to another computer if you can access it on noather computer take backup of data on that computer then right click on it then click on format then again paste all data into it.
But if you harddrive is not accessible on all computer's then your harddrive needs repairing.
Take it to the service shop and repair it they also recover data on it.
But before take it to the service shop try all my above direction of trouble shooting.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.

Disk read error

Use your restore disk, or if you have a Windows OS disk, bootup with that.
When you see the screen that gives you an option to "Repair Windows" hit the "R" key. You will be taken to a DOS prompt. Choose the Volume you want to repair (Usually number 1) then it will prompt you for an Administrator password. If you have never put one on the system, simply hit Enter. The it will take you to "C:\Windows" Type in the following...
"CHKDSK /R" (without the quote marks and hit Enter. Let chkdsk utility see if it can repair the volume. It will prompt you when it is finished.

What is a portable harddrive supposed to do. Does

NO, ACTUALLY, THE SEEK TIMES OF PORTABLE HARD DRIVES ARE SLOWER THAN REGULAR HARD DRIVES BY A LITTLE BIT, BUT THE ADVANTAGE OF A PORTABLE HD IS, YOU CAN PICK UP AND CARY 500gb (WOW) OR MORE AROUND WITH YOU WITHOUT FEAR OF DAMAGING THE HARD DRIVE AND LOOSING ALL OF THE INFO. IF YOU WANT TO SHARE MOVIES, PICTURES, GAMES ETC WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS, JUST UNPLUG IT AND GO....10 YEARS AGO, IT WOULD INVOLVE BURNING FOR HOURS AND HOURS JUST TO GET4 GIGS TO SOMEONE.
THANKS,
JAMES.

My hard drive was working on my computer a friend

Yes you can.

Go to www.westerndigital.com hover over the Support link until you see a dropdown menu then select the Downloads section. Once there click on the WD Elements link and then select your drive from the next page.

You will see all relevant software for your drive available for download on this page. Install it and reply back if you still can't access your drive as there is a possibility this is more serious than simply loosing a driver.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

I have a 500gb external elements WD drive usb 2.0

Hello,

There are three reasons this would happen:

1. Your AC adapter is dead
2. Your enclosure is shorted out
3. Your hard drive is either dead or grounding out.

This can happen for a miriad of reasons but they really aren't relevant at this point.

If either 1 or 2 is the case your best solution is a new enclosure, if three is the case the best way to find out is to test the drive in a new enclosure.

So, head to your local PC shop and ask the techs there to test you harddrive in a new enclosure, if it works in the new enclosure buy the enclosure and be happily on your way. If it doesn't the hard drive is faulty. If it's just holding a backup of your data and you have other copies on your computer, buy a new external drive(or send that one in for replacement) and you'll be fine.

If the worst case scenario prevails and you were never taught how to properly protect you data and have a dead drive with crucial files on it then reply back here with your location(Country, State and City) and I will refer you to a nearby facility that can help you retrieve your files.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

If the disk is recognized, you can go to the Disk Management console (right-click My Computer and select Manage in the popup menu). There the disk should be listed, and you can check if it is partitioned and formatted.

Also check the drive letter assignment for the disk, if there is a conflict with some other device one of both will not show. You can simply change the drive letter.

Copying sims2 game to an external hard drive

I suggest try playing the game on a different computer. This usually happens when you play the game on a computer that does not meet the games system requirement. Most probably the specifications of this computer is lower than the computer you originally play the game with.
