Unable to connect my Canon
Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Unfortunately, this is not unusual with rechargeable batteries. The best thing you can do with a rechargeable battery is to fully and completely discharge it, and then recharge it fully. After that, there's nothing else you can do except buy a new battery. You can get brand new, unbranded ones on eBay for a fraction of branded ones, and they work great. Just buy from a seller with a good reputation, and you can't lose. I usually buy multiples and never run out of battery power this way.
I need step by step
Press the FUNC/SET button. Use up/down to select Drive Mode (the rectangle, third item from the top). Use left/right to select the desired delay and press FUNC/SET. To start the self-timer, press the shutter release button.

When I open my Canon
This message ' lens error - restart camera ' is usually shown under the following condition.
An error was detected when the lens was in motion and the power has been automatically turned off. This error can occur while you hold the lens when it is in motion or you operate it in a location with excessive dust or sand in the air.Try turning the power back on, and resume shooting or playback. If this message continues to display it shows a problem with the lens and you have to open and repair it which I would not prefer as it can affect the fine mechanics inside the camera. You can contact the Canon Customer Support Help Desk from the following link. I am using this camera
I'm have the exact same problem. Purchased the camera 3.5 years ago. Recently needed to shoot a video, when finished I set the camera back to Auto and it stayed in video. Portrait mode shows manual, all other modes work as assigned. I've noticed at least TWO other posters having the same problem within the last couple of months. It's as though this camera (mfg. 2007) has a Trojan program from the factory to make us buy newer models.
Other than resetting, is there a way to flush and reload the firmware?

Just keep pulling on the back plate with the lcd towards you. The shiny thing will eventually pop off. It doesn't feel right while you're doing it. It feels as if you will break it. But I just kept taking the back off and it just popped off the shiny thing.

Hi johnandmel7
,
If what you say is right, then you have your camera malfunctioning due to a corrupt flash software.
Therefore you need to visit the service center for canon and get it repaired as they would be having the relevant tools to install the software again on your camera.
Before doing that , please follow the below steps.
1 - Check the batteries in a similar device which uses them , to make sure they are in good condition.
2- If possible check with your neighbor or friend to give them their battery for the sake of checking your cam and if your cam starts up with their batteries then you have a problem with the batteries and you have to replace them.

Don't worry, your lost photos that are very precious can be recovered with ease. I would like to introduce you a very good data Recovery software, called tenorshare data recovery which can be used to recover images from SD card and from other storage devices. This software is an assortment of data recovery components designed for recovering deleted / lost files and folders, photos, RAW images, music & video files from crashed, re-partitioned, accidentally formatted partitions & drives.
