Could be start ccts. (main board) or maybe capacitors on the power supply board.

this is looking like a common LG problem our tv started doing this tonight

Lost signal could be several things. Check that you have good connections and that your co-ax cable was made in this century. Is the TV in some sort of case? Like an entertainment center. Sounds like it's overheating. If you do I would try to move it and see if it still does it.
