You can remove or change the Window's User or administrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access to download the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Try
disabling startup programs. Go to Start > Run (search in Win 7) and type
MSConfig. Startup tab and uncheck
anything that you don't want Windows to load automatically. It will make
Windows boot faster and use less resources while running. This just disables them in startup.
Programs will still load, but when only you initiate.
Upgrade your RAM into 1GB or more, currently you are using 512MB which causes your system slowdown. On that model look for SoDIMM RAM with the DDR2 slot with 1GB or more. If you can see 2 memory slots, just buy additional RAM then put it on the blank slot.

sounds like the aspire 1640 you may need to take it in to the computer tech and get the CD / DVD replaced cos the are fearly old and do breake down or upoad the driver programs from the internet from acer as well you may do a security update from windows as well

There a few issues that can cause this, the obvious one is that the battery has failed internally, but it can also be a charging software issue. Try this. Unplug from the mains supply. Remove the battery. Leave the computer for 2 hours. Press and hold the power button for a full 2 minutes. Replace the battery, plug back in, count to 10 and power it back up.
Has the motherboard battery ever been changed? They are critical to the health of the motherboard and the machine in general.
