Sony VAIO VGN-FS630/W Notebook Questions & Answers
Bought 6 months ago and will not boot up, with battrey out it will attempt to start for a couple of secs and then nothing
After 8 days of no life at all in the laptop , having 2 computer technicians around saying it was probably the motherboard and just about to send to Sony I pressed the power button and hey presto it worked again..Guess it was just sleeping or hibernating...after all it is spring now....Actually one guy of the many forums I have visited advised just to leave the Laptop alone and perhaps it would mend itself..and hey presto he was right, although having said that I have yet to turn the laptop off and startup again..HMMMMMMM...

I have Sony VGN-FS630/W about
OK... TRY to start your SONY with the
batter removed... will it start? If it does, buy a new battery and DON'T run your Sony for very long without one!
Your Power Supply
may have failed so suspect that first. They are about $11 or so including shipping. See the link below.
Now a new
BATTERY is much more expensive starting around $27 and up ~ so I would try a new supply first! Also some shippers are getting stinky about battery shipments too so that may have added to costs?
Surprisingly, mother boards don't just up and fail... Usually some
connections like USB or audio functions fail first... so try to think of a bad mother board last. On
desktops if your "on board", "
mother board provided" audio/Network/WiFi/USB fails... it's a snap to plug in a replacement card to get them working again!
NOT so easy on a laptop.

Smart failure of hard drive
You need to back up your important information right away, create the Sony Recovery disks (if you haven't already), and replace the hard drive. You will need the recovery disks place the OS and other software that came on the sony, on the new hard drive. This installation will not have any update, it will "look" like it did when you first opened the box. Any software/hardware you have added will have to be re-installed. By backing up your important data, you can then copy this data back to the new hard drive.Hope this helps

I want to upgrade my Sony Vaio VGN-FS630/W - which largest storage hard drives are compatible and what specifications should I search for while purchase?
From the age and specification of your Sony Vaio VGN-FS630W laptop you will need to buy a 2.5inch IDE internal disk drive if you wish to upgrade the existing drive. The capacity you select will depend on how much money you want to spend as disk drive prices are much higher at present due to problems in the countries making these in the Far East due to flooding. The machine should have come with an 80GB drive so you should be able to upgrade to a 320GB IDE drive with no problem - higher capacity IDE drives may be harder to find as the majority of drives today are SATA technology. The procedure to replace the hard drive is described with graphics in a
document provided by Sony Support. You will also need software to help you migrate your existing operating system, programs and data from the old drive to the new drive unless you intend to perform a clean install of a new version of Windows. There are a number of commercial or free utilities that can help you do the migration -
Acronis True Image (commercial) is very good and effective but has to be bought - alternatively,
Easeus Todo Backup is a free utility that can do the same.
Paragon Software also offer several free utilities that can help you backup your existing drive and restore the backup on to your new drive -
Paragon Backup & Recovery 2012 Free is one of these.

Vgn-fs630w won't reboot and also when try with
Sounds like you may have 2 problems, that is
1) corrupted windows installation or faulty Hard drive causing the constant reboot.
2) faulty CD drive or dirty laser or dirty disks.
You could try pressing F10 when you see the vaio logo which will take you to the HDD based recovery options.
Test your cd/dvd disks in another machine to make sure they are o.k if they are you can try cleaning laser in cd drive.
Or if the disks are o.k and your cd drive is faulty you could use an external usb cd drive and set the bios to boot from an external drive.

What is the largest HDD
This is a 5 year old system which is ancient in todays world. Upgrading the disk to 160gb would help but that is about the top end disk size. I'd consider a newer system. It would cost in the $75-100 range. Your disk is ATA which I don't think got larger than 160.
Don't forget you need to CLONE the existing disk to the new one which can be a pain if you don't have the correct tools.

How much ram can I add and what kind
Hi
The quickest and most accurate way is to go to www.crucial.com. From there you can have the website check your system and it in turn will tell you how much memory is in the machine, how much is the maximum your machine can handle and what memory to add. You can even buy the memory from them. I've bought alot of memory from them over the years and they are always the most competitive. Good luck

My Sony Vaio VGN FS630W turns on but noting shows
Your problem can be either a problem with the LCD connection or the laptop's suspend feature. Try this:
1. Close the LCD then open it again. Wait a few seconds and the screen should light back up if it is only a problem with the suspend feature.
2. If the above does not happen, do a hard shutdown by pressing on the power button for around 5 seconds. After it shuts down, turn it on again and the screen should light back up.
If the above does not work, seems you may need to have your laptop serviced.

Sony vaio vgn-fs630/w. the ethernet port and usb ports not workin
Hi,
The best thing you can try is a Static discharge.
Please remove all the external devices. Unplug the power adaptor.Remove the battery. There should be no electricity connected.
Then press the power button and keep your finger on it for about 30 seconds to release any build up electricity.
Plug in the adaptor and battery again and see if there is still a problem.
Maybe is a good idea to get a surge protector in the future.
Regards,
Purito
