Thinking of buying old Compac Presario from

Hi

See here for an idea of the 2nd User market price of this computer and its RAM Memory Modules:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_kw=PRESARIO&_kw=SR1475CL&_dmpt=Desktop_PCs

This specification of your brother's computer may seem okay for offline, single function-at-a-time computing functions, but will almost certainly be unbearably slow browsing on the internet, opening busy webpages, accessing the internet at peak times, downloading data and updates, multi-tasking and on functions like video streaaming.

No disrespect at all to him, but even at the time your brother brought this computer in 2006, there was better, faster Dual Core CPU and DDR2 RAM technology emerging and widely available.

You would almost certainly need to upgrade the RAM by removing the 512Mb stick installed (and then discarding it - almost nobody needs 512Mb RAM sticks now) and replacing it with 2 x 1Gb sticks.

Because 1Gb DDR RAM Memory Modules are a scarce commodity, no longer in production, much sought after by users with old, slow computers and highly prized and treasured by those who have managed to get their hands on some, there is a rapidly dwindling pool of supply and the price is relatively high.

When you add the cost of the computer and the RAM, you would probably be better off using the same money to buy a faster, more powerful, more up-to-date notebook, netbook, nettop or even a slightly more up-to-date, used Desktop that takes DDR2 RAM rather than the older, slower DDR RAM of your brother's computer.

The best outcome for both of you, would be for your brother to get the highest price he can for his computer from eBay or some similar site and for you to browse Amazon Market Place for the best, most up-to-date computer you can afford.

www.amazon.com > Amazon Market Place features reputable, trusted suppliers trading warrantied products under Amazon's oversight. Pay with a major credit card for further protection from your card issuer.

I hope this helps

I have a Compaq Presario

Oftentimes the driver for the integrated LAN is rolled up into the motherboard driver. Try downloading that driver, putting on some sort of portable media (USB flash drive would be idea), and execute it on the Presario.

I would search the motherboard name (K8S-LA, if I'm not mistaken).

If it were the hard drive, I would expect a hard drive error report.

How to upgrade RAM of Compaq SRS 110 NX

You can buy a RAM from your computer from any dealer. You have to check its model, suppose DDR 2 or DDR 3 as same as your previous installed ram. You have to also check that which processor's speed it supports. e.g.- 2.9 Ghz, 3.0 Ghz etc. You can also simply give your CPU to any dealer, then they upgrade your RAM.

Motherboard failure

Failure of motherboards is usually due to breaking capacitors. A few years ago a capacitor company stole the "recipe" for making capacitors from another company and tried to make their own, unfortunately they did not get the ingredients right and the capacitors started breaking after 2-3 years of use. They sold these capacitors at very cheap prices and a lot of computer companies and power supply makers bought them. This is easy to diagnose. Look for capacitors (caps) (they look like little tiny soda cans) on your motherboard (mobo). They should be perfectly flat on top and not bulged or swelling or leaking anything. The dead giveaway is the fact that you are not getting a monitor signal and if you listen to your computer as it starts up, a few of the devices may not start (hard drive, etc). A failed video card will also give you "No signal message", but the computer should sound normal when starting up. Mobos are usually expensive to replace because the computer makers have them made especially for them and only order so many. They usually do not have a lot of extras laying around. There are a few companies that will repair broken capacitor issues. Hope this explains why they can fail. They can also fail if overheated (like when a case cooling fan fails), the cpu is overclocked and not cooled down (which raises temps), the power supply fails or by lightning and power surges. Also if you add a bunch of extra components without upgrading the power supply you can suffer underpowered situations.

Compaq 3400 amd athlon 64 processor has black screen with orange

Normaly if the computer stops responding after loading the OS, the issue most probably is related the software. If the computer stops responding before loading the OS, then most probably it would be the hardware that causes it.

Did you add any new hardware in the pc? If you did, remove the hardware and try again. If the problem solved that try reinstalling it again 1 at a time to determine which hardware actually cause the issue.

If you hear any beeping noise when you turn the pc on, observe the sound as it determines what hardware is faulty. There could be a lot of reason for this issue, RAM, Motherboard could be some of the causes.

Try these steps in sequence, until a solution is found.
Step 1: Begin troubleshooting by removing media and connected devices
  1. Turn on the computer and remove any CDs and DVDs from their drives using the CD/DVD eject button on the outside of the CD/DVD drive.
If you are unable to turn on the computer and/or eject the discs, continue using these steps. Remember to remove the discs when the computer has power and you are able to open the drive door.
  1. Turn off the computer and unplug the power cable from the power outlet.
  2. With the computer turned off remove all other media and devices that are connected to the computer except for the mouse, monitor, and keyboard. Remove any floppies, printers, USB and FireWire devices, music players, cameras, and flash memory cards.
  3. With the media and devices removed, turn on the computer.
  4. If the computer has the same startup problem, leave the devices disconnected, turn off the computer and continue to Step 2. If the computer does not have the same problem, continue using these steps.
  5. If the computer is able to open Windows after the media and devices were removed, one of these items was preventing Windows from opening. Find which device or media item is causing the problem by reattaching or reinserting each to the computer one at a time. Restart the computer each time a device or media item is added until the startup problem reoccurs.
  6. Once the media or device that is causing the problem has been identified, do not continue to use it. You can troubleshoot the device or media further. Here are some helpful troubleshooting tips:
    • Now that you know which device is contributing to the startup problem, you can search the Internet or visit the manufacturer Support Web site to find more help and information.
    • CD, DVD, floppy, or camera cards that are damaged, dirty or scratched may interfere with the startup process. Do not start the computer with media in the drives.
    • The computer may try to start an operating system from an external storage device, such as a USB or FireWire drive. You can immediately work around this problem by attaching external storage devices only after Windows has opened.
    • Camera cards that are left in printers can cause startup problems. Do not leave camera cards in printers.
    • Some printers that have media card readers might contribute to startup problems when used with computers that have older BIOS versions. Updating the BIOS on the computer may resolve the problem. For further information about how to find and download BIOS updates for your HP or Compaq computer, please refer to Updating the BIOS.
  7. If the problem still exists, continue to the next step.

Lightscribe dvd writer840

Hi,

Before reading the rest of this article, make sure the DVD is
clean and undamaged. You can also try inserting a special
DVD cleaner disk in the machine, to make sure the heads
are not dirty. These cleaner disks are available from your
neighborhood movie outlet for 10 bucks or so.

There are several DVD and CD formats and not all drives can
read all of them, so it is also not unusual to be unable to read
disks created by another machine .....

However:

A quick check of your DVD drive's specifications at:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=15764
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

indicates that your drive should be able to read most popular
formats, so disk compatibility is probably not the problem.
==============================================

Your problem can be either hardware or software related:

1) Make sure that the correct Windows drivers are installed.
Uninstall (using device manager) and re-install them if
necessary.

Many rogue programs and commercial computer games
deliberately damage or corrupt these device drivers, in
order to discourage disk copying.

Games that use "Star-Force" copy protection and SONY
audio disks are notoriously evil and aggressive, in causing
deliberate damage to Windows (and in some cases to the
physical hardware itself) in order to promote their perverse
corporate agendas.

Sony is now facing criminal charges in many countries
around the world for releasing the infamous SONY RootKit,
causing damage to millions of consumers.

(Google: "SONY rootkit" for more info)

Also look for articles on the subject by Mark Rusinovich,
originally from Sysinternals, now at Microsoft.

2) Run a good malware scanner on your computer to make
sure that you have no rootkits installed.

Try utilities like: F-Secure, Black Light, Rootkit Revealer,
RegDelNull.exe, from sysintenals, winternals etc.

A root-kit is a special type of Trojan Horse program,
designed to be stealthy and invisible to anti-virus
utilities. These root-kits exploit weaknesses in Windows
design to make themselves totally invisible and difficult
to remove.

Root-kits specifically designed for copy/piracy protection,
replace or alter windows device drivers, intercept the data
read from the CD/ DVD drive, slow down disk burning to
a crawl, and often attack CD burning, copying or cloning
software, including virtual device drivers like "Alcohol".

3) Once you are 100% sure that software is not at fault,
which is the most likely scenario, replace the DVD
drive, since they are cheap and generally not repairable.

Hope this helps, Martin

P.S. I have written another article on this subject on FixYa,
under "slow DVD burning"
