You need to go to the hp download site and download the System Maintenance Utility Software. Its free, but you need it before you can clean the print heads. also, for some reason it works best when hooked to the network, not directly to Computer.

Remove top cover (fig 1), observe the location of the paper sensor (fig 2) press both sides of the sensor to unlock & pull it up gently as shown in fig 3. Observe the sensor flag has to move both directions freely and it has to maintain home position with the help of two springs. In case of any one of the spring dislocated flag struck respective direction..I think one of the spring dislocated in your case.. observe & fix it proper.. best of luck...
HOE TO CLEAN PRINTER HEADS
its depending on the brand, and if you have cartridges with or without integrated printheads, with integrated printheads its much easyer and it spills less ink, but the cleaning you can mean not the clean function on the printer self but to clean with a cartridge flush , i have done it several times with a coffee saucer with some lukewarm tap water, years ago by canon printers perfect but there is the loose printhead but there is a special flush-alcohol for if its clogged but after that if you print not much you can then best printhead thus it maintained flush him briefly just after the changing of cartridges and especially if you himself refilled it keeps closing rubbers clean where the cartridges are placed so that it stays clean , but as soon if a printhead is for a more then short time glogged if it is dry the printhead fails due to lack of cooling most times the refill can comes too late. but if only neccesary to clean when clogged nozzles use always a good special cartridge flush
I didn't use my printer
In many cases after a printer has not been used for a long period of time, the ink will become dry. Most printers will have a "Clean print heads" option. Also trying to print a page or two may resolve the issue.
If it continues however, the printer may need replaced. Dried ink can block the print heads and in some cases can not be unblocked without taking the printer apart, which will void the warranty.
