Reboot your machine while holding the F8 key as it boots back up. A

The os will start in
safe mode. run an AVG virus scan, then run Defrag by exploring
your computer, right
click on C: drive, click PROPERTIES, then the TOOLS
tab, click the "check now" button, and only checkmark
the top box 'fix file system errors',
then click ok, the computer will then
tell you it will scan upon next

After Defrag runs for about an hour and it is finished, restart the

pressing F8 on reboot,
then run a registry

registrybooster, then reboot again.
If it still won't run right, you may want to reinstall Windows and see
if

Good luck.

I am getting an error code of 00161 and 00163 on m...
Error code 161 means your CMOS battery is dead and 163 is that system date and time are not set (which make sense as the CMOS battery is dead).
You need to replaced your CMOS motherboard battery to resolved this issue.
Where is the connection plug for cable of the
Hi cifranc, the connection plug for the cable of the outside internet modem is located right beside the USB ports. whatever is the surface of that cable that is connected to modem is also the same goes to your laptop..

I do not think you fixed the CMOS battery - (backup battery = CMOS battery)
According to the error codes, you have a dead backup battery and the time is not set. Makes sense?
161
(Dead battery.) 1. Go to Checking the Backup Battery
2. Backup battery.
3. System board.
163
(Time and date were not set.) 1. Set time and date.
2. System board.
Go to www.ibm.com Find and download the user manual, and the "hardware maintenance manual."
Do you know how to get into bios/setup?
Start with the machine OFF. HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE TO HOLD THE "F1" key.
WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn the power on, and CONTINUE TO HOLD "F1"
This will get you into the bios "setup." You should check the date, bootup order, etc, and reset.
I would check the "wire" you think you reconnected---you may just not have actually reconnected it.
The "hardware maintenance manual" shows you how to maintain this machine, and it explains the meaning of the error codes.
This will get you started on looking for the manual:

Thinkpad 380ED error 161 163
Replace CMOS battery and reset time and date. Turn the computer over. Loosen 1 screw on RAM and CMOS door and lift door away. CMOS battery is to the left of the RAM chip (if you have the extra RAM installed.) Using a very small flat screwdiver, gently insert it under the bottom edge of the battery itself, between the rdge of the battery and it's holder, and GENTLY pry up the bottom edge of the battery. It will easily pop out. DO NOT REMOVE THE BLACK PLASTIC CMOS BATTERY HOLDER ITSELF OR YOU WILL RUIN IT! Go to Batteries Plus or Radio Shack and perchase a CP1220 (3volt) battery. They are less than $4.00. Make sure that you have the new battery correct side up and insert it back into the holder by sliding it in from the bottom and gently push down and the new battery will pop back in. Re-start your machine and when the errors pop up hit "enter" and then enter the correct time and date. You should be good to go from there. Don't let anyone badmouth your 380ED. I have one that I used at trade shows for years and it still performs perfectly. It is built like a tank and won't run XP but Win98 is just fine on this rig. IBM (Lenovo) sure built them with the consumer in mind back then. Easy to add RAM and change CMOS battery, unlike my new ACER Aspire One, and my vintage AcerNote Lite that has to be completely dissambled to do either!

good day, if the beep code is long then that means you have a memory card problem, hope this helps, have a nice day
How does one replace the button (bios) battery
you will need to turn the laptop over and undo all the screws and remove the case to the laptop. this will allow you to get to the motherboard. once you get to the motherboard then you will be able to remove the battery. Be very careful
Where is the harddrive located
Open the compartments on the bottom of your laptop. It will be a little bigger than a Zippo lighter and it will definitely not look like a battery nor memory.

Try this:
Start with the machine OFF, hold down and CONTINUE TO HOLD the "F1" key and turn on the power WHILE STILL HOLDING DOWN "F1"
This
should get you into the bios/setup, which on most thinkpads is pretty
simple and self explanatory. You can reset the date, and something
called "initialize" as I remember.
POST YOUR MODEL NUMBER!!!!
Ibm.com's
support is famous for having very good, extensive support for
thinkpads. I searched for this error no. but we really need the model
