First boot device option not showing in boot menu
There are several things that could cause the problem. There could be no power to the device or no data cable connected (loose cables), the boot record could be corrupted or the device has failed. If you recently opened the case (desktop), make sure that the 4 pin power cable is fully seated in the device and that the IDE cable is correctly connected to device and the motherboard (at the master cable connection). (Take the device out of the case and check that the jumper is set to Master or Cable Select. This can vary depending on the manufacturer. If you are unsure, please post a comment with the device information.) If you have a laptop, the IDE and power cables are unified at the device (44 pin). The cables can also come loose or damaged. Try replacing the cable or using a different power connection from your power supply.Try accessing the BIOS and see if the device is listed. (Depending on the motherboard, this can be accessed by pressing ESC, F1, F2 or F10 repeatedly as the computer starts. If you miss the timing, try again.) If the BIOS doesn't list the device, the computer can't see it.Which device is currently not showing up? If it is your hard disc, get a system recovery, install or upgrade disc for your OS. With a Windows OS, get one that matches the service pack and version (Home or Pro) that is currently installed. Boot to CD (press F12 repeatedly as the computer starts) and select the Repair option. Attempt to repair the Master Boot Record with the BootRec command in the command prompt. Type "bootrec /fixmbr " without the quotes followed by enter. (Other bootrec commands may also be needed. A complete reinstall of the OS might be required if the bootrec repair doesn't work.) Note: bootrec is used with Vista and Win7. XP just uses the fixmbr command directly. If these steps don't help, you may need to replace the device. If it's your hard disc, you may need to use your system recovery optical disc set and backup to restore your computer. You might be able to salvage the data from the original hard disc by placing the drive in the freezer (protect it from the freezer moisture). However, some of the OS information or the original recovery partition on the disc may not transfer so you need to be prepared to reinstall your OS if you do not have the recovery disc set.I hope this helps. Cindy Wells (Yes, I've dealt with a corrupted MBR with Win7. Assuming you made a System Repair disc, it's not too bad. If you have an older Windows OS that didn't ship with a Windows CD, find someone with the install CDs.)

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
hope this helps

Intel ASUS P4 845 GL Motherboard
Hi,
For an ASUS P4BGL-VM Intel 845GL Chipset Ultra ATA100 MATX CPU Type: Intel Pentium 4 478-Pin (OEM), the Asus site specifies max of 2 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 2GB PC2100 / PC1600 non-ECC DDR or SDRAM memory but not "and".
Personally, I find it more practical to install 2 X 1Gb rather than a single 2Gb.
Hope this gives you some idea. Kind regards.

Hi alkdt, if windows does not allow you to increase to more than four bit color the fault lays with the onboard video card & not windows.
There are a few things you can try to improve the display in XP. First thing I would suggest is for you to run windows update service. Once this service is loaded click on the custom button & look to the right side of the page. Your looking for hardware or software updates (For the video). There may be an update for your graphics card. If windows does not list an upgrade for your integrated video you can download the driver software from Asus, click on this link to load; http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P4BGL-VM&SLanguage=en-us
Uninstall the current video software for your Asus board before installing the new. This Asus board was made in 2003 & the onboard video uses your system memory to function. Suggest you buy a PCI graphics card & install it in to an opened PCI slot. Two reasons for this suggestion. Today’s PCI cards come with their own memory. Two, a PCI card will free up your system memory for windows. Like these PCI card;

XFX cardscome with a lifetime warranty.
Good luck alkdt!

Asus Motherboard not booting
Hi,
Once you,ve Flashed The Bios unsucessfully the board is dead.
Theres Nothing You Can Do, Unless The Bios-Chip Is In A Socket On The Motherboard, Which Is Removable.
You Can Then Send It To A company to have the bios re-flashed.
The Bios Is The Motherboards Memory. Instructing it What to Do on Boot-up, what it,s capabilitys are, what to do, what to look for
For when they,re connected to it, what how to configure items. et,c et,c. By re-flashing The Bios.
You,ve rendered The Board Useless
The Valuable Lesson Here Is. If it,s Not Broken Don,t Try to Fix It. Look On The Internet For Bios/eeprom Reprogramming.
