You are looking for DHCP server. It provides the IPs addresses for devices to connect. DNS resolves the IP into a name. Not really required unless you are setting up a virtual server, or the special setup.

The ISP modem connects to the main LAN port on the router. The PC connects to any other port. Done. You should have internet via wire at this point.

When you configured your wireless router to create your wireless network, you set:
* SSID (the "name" of your network)
* encryption-level (use 'WPA' or higher-level)
* password for your SSID

So, connect an Ethernet cable between your computer and your router, and "login" to your router, to view/change the password.

This is most likely due to the Motorola modem still having the Media Access Control (MAC) address of the device that was previously connected the modem in NVRAM.
In order to clear this old MAC address, the easiest thing to do is to unplug the power cable from the modem for 15 to 20 minutes. This allows the NVRAM in the modem to clear and makes it able to accept the new MAC address of the router.
After the modem has been unplugged from the power for 15 to 20 minutes, plug the Ethernet cable of the router into the modem and plug the power cord back in to the modem. After the modem syncs back up to the network, it should add the MAC address of the WRT54GL router to its NVRAM and assign it an IP address. This should allow the router to connect your systems to the Internet.

You can set the password by logging into the router. You can do this via your web browser. You will need to type the router's IP address (the default address is 192.168.0.1) into the browser's address bar. You will then be prompted to enter the current (or default) username and password for the router. After you have successfully logged in, you should be able to navigate to the appropriate section and change the password to one of your own choosing.

to check your actual internet connection speed, visit http://speedtest.net and perform the test there. it will report the upload and download speed and from there, you can report to your ISP the problem. they might have overlooked your port. they might have put you on a slower port that what you have paid or subscribed for.

the problem with wireless routers is that they only will put out little more than 1mbps it may say 54mbps, but it'll usually only download at about 1 mbps, ive found it frustrating myself, but thats all the firmware in those will allow, ive tried to upgrade mine, but still the same, there isnt a fix that i'm aware of, wireless "N" maybe different but i doubt it, sending that much information wirelessly creates alot of heat,

Wireless broadcast is usually the first thing to go when a router is failing. How old is your router? Try these steps:
Turn off computer
Remove power from router
Remove power from modem
Wait 2 minutes
Restore power to modem
Wait for modem to boot up and gain all signals
Restore power to router
Wait for router to completely powerup
Watch for wireless indicator light
Boot up computer, verify your wireless network is broadcasting
Connect

If you still can not get the wireless network to access the internet, try connecting your computer with an ethernet cable. If everything connects fine and you can access the web, it might be that your router is going bad and needs replacing.

Try running the ethernet cable from the modem to port #2 on your router. Then run the second cable from port#3 on the router to your computer. This effectively uses the router as a pass-thru and bypasses all its functions. If you are able to access the internet this way, you need to replace the router.

Hi,
Make sure that the computer is connected to the router properly and there is not loose conection. If it good then check the IP address on that computer. Make ssure that there is static IP address on the computer.
The default gateway number will be the IP address to access the router set up.
If you do not get IP address and if it says media disconected then try to disable the Local area connection and enable it.
If that doesn't work then try on another computer.
