Kinetic,
The dial you're talking about is called an "infinite switch" and the burner only does as it is told to do by this switch. Since you'r having issues with it, I can guarantee that it's the switch that giving you grief and needs to be replaced.
You didn't mention which burner is the problem, but there are only 2 inf. switches for this machine.

7403P239-60Easy to replace and the bonus is that which ever one you need, the cost is ~$45.00!
All you gotta do (after you have the switch) is to pull the oven out so you can get behind it to work. If it's plugged into the wall UNPLUG IT! If it's hard wired and there is no plug, go outside to your main breaker panel and kill power to the oven.
Now remove all the screws holding the aluminum rear control panel cover and set it aside. You'll now see all the inf. switches. DO NOT REMOVE WIRES FROM THE FAILED SWITCH JUST YET! Remove the knob from the failed switch, under there you'll see 2 screws holding it in place... remove these AFTER you have noticed which direction the "D" shaped shaft is oriented (is the flat side of the "D" at the top? the bottom? the side?)
Now you have the old one out... still without removing the wires from the old one... install the new one with NO wires connected just yet. Now.... pull one wire at a time from the old one and place it on the EXACT terminal on the new one. Do this for each of the wires until the old one is bare and the new one is loaded with wires.
Replace the rear panel, push it back in place and fire it up!
Easy-Breezy... in and out in less than an hour.
