If drive not spinning, definitely dead. If spins and not recognized by laptop cmos, the logic board on drive is toast.
Afraid that you have a nice cute paperweight.

Your really pushing the lower minimum requirement limits if you're trying to use Ubuntu 11 or Ubuntu 12. Especially with your on-board graphics chip which borrows system ram.

Try Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS (Lucid Lynx) instead.

Go Here and download the 1st link on the list under Desktop CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/

OR...

Here is a direct link to the ISO file you need to download and then burn to a CD:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ubuntu-10.04.4-desktop-i386.iso

If you don't have Software for burning iso's to CD's then download and install this totally FREE CD Burning program:

Windows is corrupted or the hard drive has issues, if you have a cd installation disc try a fresh install, if no change! the hardware needs to be checked for possible replacement.

If the CMOS battery was dead you would still get a display.with an error telling you about probable bios errors etc.

There are a couple of quick easy things you cane check first without opening it up.

Make sure you have not accidentally used the FN+F5 key
That combination sets the laptop to use an external display.

Try an external display

If using that does not give you a display take a small torch (flashlight if in USA) and shine it at an angle on the laptop screen.
If you can see any sort of picture you would be looking at replacement of some minor parts to the laptop screen

Hope this gives you the information you need. If not add any extra information you may have and lets see if we can FixYa

Check the driver in device manager. You would be looking for any icons with an X or a ? next to them. The driver probably isn't the issue, so I would search for the model number of your laptop plus "cd drive" on ebay. These are pretty cheap and are easily replaced. If that doesn't fixya, then there's possibly something wrong with the motherboard.

If it is a bad virus that won't let you do anything on the computer, follow the instructions on this link. If you can install programs on your computer, follow only steps 7 and 8 from the above link.

To reset the BIOS read the information from this link.

In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

If it doesn't recognize the server it isn't a problem with the computer, its most likely the program you use to send and receive e-mails (errors like these are commonly found in Outlook and Outlook Express). Thunderbird is a very good software to use for e-mailing, it has import tools to help you bring your emails, address books, and settings from your older email program to Thunderbird. http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-GB/thunderbird/
Hope you found this helpful :)
