If you can play back captured images without any problem then your camera has a faulty CCD sensor. If you can get hold of a new CCD sensor block for this model somehow then you can install it yourself. Otherwise camera has to go to your Nikon agent.

I have had success with this photo recovery software... Download the program

You have to use a card reader either on your computer or an external USB card reader. Put the card in the card reader, open the recovery program, then select the drive where files are deleted, then press "Start" and wait for it to do it's magic.

if you feel technically inclined you can open the camera carefully and take it apart to the point where you can remove the upper circuit board ( NOTE 1: make a careful note of every screw you remove since they are different size and need to be used exactly in the same order) and then the small black plastic assembly above the circuit board below, you can see the defective switch on top of the 2nd board, remove the plastic part of the switch until you see the bare 2 contacts on the circuit board, solder a small piece of wire to bridge the contacts, now very carefully reassemble the camera observing the exact order of screws used, see NOTE 1. If everything is back in order insert the battery and the camera should work now.
note: should you not be inclined to do this work and want to sell the camera as is for spare parts I am interested, drop me a note at: cocnutray at yahoo.com. A Nikon repair shop will charge between $80 to $110 FOR THIS TYPE OF REPAIR, THEY WILL ACTUALLY REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE MICRO-SWITCH. HOPE THIS HELPS :-)

Rotate the mode dial to "SET UP". Use the cursor pad to select the waving flag and press OK. Select the desired language and press OK.

Without being harsh or rude don't do anything to that memory card but take it to someone who has the proper recovery program. There is a chance as long as you haven't formatted the memory card and started shooting new images over the ones you want to retrieve. There are a lot of recovery programs on the Internet but most are for specific memory cards.

I use Lexar memory card because I know the photo Lab I use has recovery programs for Lexar and SanDisk. Some off brand or no name memory cards may be more difficult to extract the data from.

To answer your question "What am I doing wrong" you aren't doing anything wrong except not having the correct retrieval program.

Sorry I know this isn't a quick fix but it's the best way of saving those images.

Having gone two months without a response, I assume my suggestion to use a card reader solved the problem.

I had this same problem. You can' t take the pic directly above it you have to angle your shot. Eventually I figured out that it was easier to shut off the flash and just use a secondary lighting source like a couple lamps.

You can download the current versions of all (free) Nikon software from
http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/61

You might want to consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

Unfortunately, you can't. The P4 only works with SD cards, and SD cards max out at 2GB in size. This is a hardware issue and cannot be changed by a firmware update.

I don't suppose you will regard this as helpful, but the camera is a goner. A repair would cost more than it is worth. By all means have a go at trying to get the lens back on, you won't be able to make things any worse, but then go shopping for a new one. Camera specifications have been going up and prices coming down rapidly recently. You will be able to buy a nice camera for less than the price of fixing this one, and it will be a better camera.

Try formatting the memory card in the camera. There will be an option to do this on one of the camera's setup menus.

Nikon COOLPIX P4... | Answered on Oct 28, 2010

If your pics are safely downloaded onto your computer, then insert the card into the camera, go into the menu and find "format"...follow the on-screen instructions.

Sorry you can't. I

t's not designed to be used in that way and so totally lacks the hardware needed to output a live video feed.
