This is a common problem, your drive is in what is known as safe mode or kernel mode, what has happened is some modules of the firmware have failed to load and so it is now only detecting the logic board. I'm afraid there won't be much you can do without the special software to read the firmware aspect of the drive, you need to load what is known as a loader which contains the code to boot the heard drive up so we can write to the firmware (the firmware is stored on the platters) so really your only option is to send it off to a data recovery company who have all the gear like Digital Recovery

U can do one thing , convert your HDD using ide to usb or sata to usb converter and connect ur HDD via usb and check what happens....

check the bios can see it or check the jumpers are fitted correctly on the drive. slave or master ? check cables connected properly, power and ide cable

you are not likely get parts for a hard drive. You simply replace them. If you have data to remove then there is a plethora of software to down load.[ PCIspector/BadCopy Pro to name but 2] You could also put it into the freezer overnight and try running it before it warms up.

Assuming this was your only hard disk, there is nothing on the disk for the BIOS to boot from. You need to boot from the installation disk for your operating system. The OS installer will then let you create a partition and install to it.

Hi theres a couple of ways i can think of, 1st, buy a replacement board but needs to be the same model and just replace it. you might get a cheap one from ebay. 2nd, if you phone maxtor and tell them u have a faulty hard drive, with important files they ask you to send it to them and they give you a price to get the information off, i cant remember how much it was the last time but its possible. all the best, and gl retrieving the info.. You may have damaged the heads in the drive

are you sure this is the error code ca699178 ?click start control panel administrative tools computer management then select event viewer this may vary depending on what operating system you have

extend the events there you will see errors in red you will no what exactly what the error was and at what time it occured

you might be able work your way through the problem

I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.

I doubt they are still available but usually one can be found on the maxtor web site, (many years ago).
