Acoustic Research S108PS Subwoofer Questions & Answers
When I turn the gain
Open up the sub and check the filter capacitors in the power supply section.
In fact , check all the capacitors to see if any are bulging at the top, or leaking out the bottom.
The most likely suspects will be the filter caps right after the bridge rectifier though.
If that all looks good, do a resistance check on your ground leads between the sub and signal source. A bad ground can cause a signal hum too.

I have a s108sp subwoofer
Hey there houleo!
If your subwoofer has a stereo input and stereo outputs, then it's a good idea to send the signal from your receiver to the sub, then out to the other speakers you have hooked up. Some subwoofers will take the low frequencies out of the signal to the left and right speakers, so that the sub handles it alone. This often gives a nice crisp sound.

What makes you feel that isn't right?
You can't just slap a sub onto a receiver and have it work optimally (if at all). The receiver must typically be configured to know it has a sub, then bass managment and sharing decisions must be made, then crossover frequency choices and levels adjusted to match it all up.
All self-powered amps work that way.
Have you looked at the manual for your JVC?

DC 12v adapters are common and I think that would work. The similar "Powered Partner" speakers used a 14v DC adapter. Just check the size of the plug and the configuration (center pin is +). Radio Shack and other sellers have universal adapters.
