For $30 you can buy a standalone bobbin winder (Sidewinder) at JoAnn's Fabrics or Amazon. It's a great little accessory (battery or electrical) because it saves wear and tear on your machine but also allows you to wind multiple bobbins without having to unthread the machine.

Remove the thread from the machine. Install a brand new needle.ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread. Set the upper tension to the midway point.Insert the bobbin in the bobbin case (make sure it is turning the correct direction) and thread the bobbin tensioner. Install the bobbin case in the machine.Insert the fabric under the presser foot. Lower the presser foot. While holding the top thread tail with your left hand, manually turn the handwheel (always toward you, never away!) one revolution until the top thread has pulled the bobbin thread up. Raise the presser foot and sweep both threads under the presser foot toward the back (you can use a stiletto, a pencil, or some other tool to sweep the threads). Lower the presser foot, gently hold both thread tails with your left hand and slowly turn the handwheel (either manually or by motor) to form a couple of stitches. Then let go of the thread tails and continue sewing.If it continues to cause thread nests or you have other issues, then your machine may need service.

Start by trying to turn the wheel with the bobbin and the auto-thread cassette removed. Look inside to see if there is any thread caught anywhere both in the bobbin area and also in the complicated mechanism where the auto-thread cassette fits.

• If it is still stiff, remove the needle plate, which also holds-down the cover over the bobbin carrier. (You may need to use a coin and a pair of pliers to undo the 2 screws as there is very limited vertical clearance at this point)
• Remove the bobbin carrier, noting which way it fits. Thread and fluff can build up in this area.
• Thread might have become wound round under the rotating component into which the bobbin carrier fits.
• Put one drop of oil in the edge of the large screw in the centre of the rotating component and turn the wheel a few times. Put another drop of oil in the same place and continue to turn the wheel.
• Look carefully with a small flashlight into the case and see if there is any fluff or thread bits caught in the feed dogs mechanism.
• Put one drop of oil onto any joint between moving parts that you can see.

Now, if there is no improvement and you cannot see any threads caught, you need to see if there is anything wrapped round the bevel gear drive under the bobbin carrier rotating mechanism. (I apologize for omitting to say about Large +Screw #6, located in the top of the case where the Auto-Thread cassette fits)

• Splitting the case enables you to have a good look around under the mechanisms and check for any thread or fluff. Put one drop of oil on any moving joint.
• Rotate the wheel, being careful to keep your fingers out of the way as you do so. Take careful note of the area below the bobbin mechanism, where there is a bevel gear that turns the drive through 90 degrees.
• There is also an eccentric part that moves the feed dogs mechanism. Check there is nothing clogging-up this bit. You can use Lithium-based grease very sparingly to lube the cams and plastic/nylon components
• Put one drop of oil onto the needle-shaft, above where it slides through the mounting. Turn the wheel a few times and put just one more drop of oil.
• Look at the crank mechanism that drives the needle-shaft and apply one drop of oil on any moving joint or component.
• While you are in this area check that all the bits that move do so freely, especially the little joints of the auto-thread.
• Have a good look around the area of the bobbin winder, up by the wheel. - Has the bobbin winder drive rubber gone gooey? Is there anything caught up there?

Hopefully you may find what is causing the stiffness. It is not really likely that one of the shaft bearings is tight but you can put a little oil each side of the bearing and continue to turn the wheel to see if this frees-up any. Take care to wipe any excess oil off, particularly where it might get on anything you sew. Don't get oil on the drive belt and don't blow any fluff up into the motor area or, especially, the speed-sensor disk (which is a black thing with fine slots. Assemble the components carefully. You might take a few cell-phone pictures to help remember how things go.

Here's MY answer.

• The case halves are held together by 5 larger screws, one under the carry handle, obvious from the holes in the casing, plus one smaller screw up by the foot-raising lever.

• There is also the final screw, which is a devil to find. You have to remove the plastic tray to which the spool carrier is attached, up by the spool winder. You do not need to remover the spool winder stop but the small screw on the left, in the bottom of the tray-shape.

Next, WITH CARE , lever round the tray with a thin blade and use a small screwdriver to ease it out of the case; there are 2 bits that stick out more than the rest.

• Once this tray is out you can see a small bar with a screw. Remove this screw and the 2 halves of the case will separate.

TAKE CARE NOT TO DROP THE SCREW INTO THE WORKS!. A piece of sticky-tack on the end of the screwdriver helps here if the screwdriver is not magnetized.

• Now you can carefully ease the ribbon-strip cable from the circuit board and move the case round to be able to access the screws that hold the circuit board. You do not need to pull out the other cables; just take a tad of care as you work.

The bobbin winder mechanism is held in by 1 screw - take this out and you can then easily replace the rubber drive ring -(which you have providently ordered)

• Take the opportunity to clear out any fluff and dust while you have the cases apart. Put ONE drop of oil in the center of the bobbin carrier rotating mechanism and one drop on any moving joints.

• Replace the components/ ribbon cable in the reverse order, taking care not to drop the small screw! It is necessary to carefully line-up the hole into which it fits. It is surprising how easily the tray clips back into place, compared with the hassle you had getting it out.

I took both my CS 8080s apart last week to replace the drive rubbers. The first took nearly 1.5 hours, the next 1 hour as I knew what I was about.

On my one the rubber ring had degraded into a sticky mess and come off the pulley-shaped wheel on the bottom end of the winder shaft. It had stuck itself to the casing by the shaft bearing. Using Q Tips and nail varnish remover I managed to clean it all off. To access the screw that holds the bobbin winder mechanism in the case; you first need to remove the screws that hold the circuit board in place and ease it out of the way.

I had the same problem when opening my machine. The problem is a screw underneath the bobbin winder area. Pull the bobbin base off and then gently pull up the bobbin winder assembly from under the front cover. You will see a screw in the corner to remove so that you can complete the task. Are you holding onto the end of the thread while it starts to wind? You must provide tension on the starting thread by inserting the end of. The thread up through a hole in the bobbin and hold onto the end to start the winding.

It's a nasty job, bring it in for service, you'll only make it worse.

check the power cord to see if it plugged in to the machine correctly
& if it is then something could be loose or broken inside, it needs to be serviced

You need to remove the screw that holds the plate around the bobbin winder. CAREFULLY lever round this plate until you can work it out from the surrounding casing. Under this plate is a brassy-looking screw. Remove this and the front half of the casing comes away. Be careful not to damage the ribbon connector strip and the wire attached to the micro-switch on the spool holder plate. You may have to remove the screws that hold the circuit board in place to access the belt.
