Does not recognize black cartridge
Take a look at my tip on cartridges it may save you a lot of time and money
http://www.fixya.com/support/r3845491-ink_cartridge
OR
Read on and see if any applies to you.
Check that you removed the protective tape. some cartridges have two of these pieces of tape one over the head and possibly on on the contacts to the printer.
If you recently re-filled or had the cartridge refilled or even bought one of the many cheaper replacement cartridges you should read on
Most modern cartridges have an ink level chip built on to them.
Should the level drop below 25% then most of these chips lock up and will not reset.
Re-filling them will have no effect
If you are lucky you should be able to find either a chip resetter around on the INTERNET or maybe even local
OR
Even better empty cartridges that never need to be reset.
The second option is my preference
I realise these are not for your specific printer but there are others listed on both those sites as well.
cheaper cartridge problems have been on the rise recently and that is for ALL makes of printer.
If you try to clean the contacts be VERY careful cleaning contacts and ONLY use isopropynol on a lint free bud or cloth.
Also be very gentle.
I have seen the contacts cleaned and cartridges ruined with other methods of cleaning.
Rubbing too hard can also cause a badly set chip to move making it inoprable.
I dont like full prices replacements either which is why I always provide the links
I usually reccomend that people take back any cartridge that does not work right from the get-go.
I dont know of anyone who has had a problem doing that be it a shop refill or otherwise.
No matter if I paid $1 or $100 for a cartrdige I would still expect it to work
Hope this gives you the information you need

How to remove the print head?
When you lift the lid like you're changing inks, you will see on each side long plastic covers that pop out, all the wires and the ground wire have to be removed and then you can set the whole top aside, after that there's several phillips screws that come out and you lift the middle cover off. The printhead is exposed at this time and the tubes come off, and the drive belt. The head will lift off the left side of the rails. Good Luck!

My brother 3240 inkjet printer will not print the
There's not a lot you can do, once the printhead is plugged like that it's a shop repair. It will need a new printhead that only a shop can replace and the cost of the new printhead is around $120.00. You're better off to buy the new similar machine from Brother for around $120.00 and get a new one year warranty.

How can I turn off the Keep Printed Documents selection?
First right click the printer icon in the SysTray (by the time usually) clear all documents.
Then pull the power cord and leave it unplugged for a few minutes, When you plug it back in the the memory in the printer should be clear.

Nearly empty message after replacing ink
I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

Unable to init.after period of none use
Unplug the printer from power cord.Press and hold the "menu" button, then plug the device.You'll see on the LCD screen a "machine error" code.If this code is 40,41,49 or 4F the print head is defective.If the error is 48 - defective print head cable or circuit board.If the error is 50 or 51 there is error in Purge unit and printer require service.If the error is 46 the waste ink tank is full.Follow this:
Enter 80, then scroll down with the arrow down (round) key. You'll find an entry listed as purge count. If number is over 6000, enter 2 7 8 3.This will reset the purge count value. Then restart the printer, hopefully without the annoying cannot clean message.

Oh brother
I don't think there is a reset procedure for resetting MFC 3240c cartridges.
Professional refill facilities use a code reset device on cartridges.
Users that want to refill their own cartridges often use a piece of cellotape or plastic bag to cover cartridge sensor. This can damage printers head if ink goes too low and printer keeps printing.
My suggestion: stay away from troubles and buy original cartridges.
Here is a link on howto:

Can't Send or receive faxes? Help!
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Initially and if haven't been tried:
- determine if there is dialtone on the unit itself. Temporarily replace the unit with an ordinary telephone. Dial a fax number and check if it will dial, connect and hear the fax handshake (fax tone). Reversely, have a fax machine dial/send fax to that number and answer it using the regular phone. Again the fax handshake (fax tone) should be audible;
- verify that the telephone line is connected to the port marked "LINE" and not the EXT;
- if there are other devices such as a telephone answering device or a wireless phone, temporarily disconnect them until the main issue has been resolved;
- if the telephone is part of a multiple features/packages of a subscription, check that a splitter/filter is used;
- likewise, check the modem.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

MFC 3240C seems to dead
unable to clean means the ink absorber is full and you need to have the absorber box replaced and the counter reset at a shop. The job usually costs less than a hundred dollars, but the new mfc 490 is selling for about $129.00 with a one year warranty.
