There is small switch located at front circuit board that is not working properly and causing "cover not open" message.
Take off LCD cabinet section then remove front cabinet section, remove screws on circuit board and turn it to see that switch.
There can be lose connection on switch terminals or switch is not being pressed properly with lens cover lever. Please check it carefully.
Thanks.

The DCR-HC30 camcorder had a recall that Sony still honored up to at least 2009 summer and may still. They had problems with the CCD device and the glue used to put it together melting. I sent the unit to Sony after calling their repair center and getting a RMA number. The sent my unit back (it's about 4-5 years old) repaired for free. I appreciate Sony for their help in the issue as it was a recurring defect.
This camcorder is one of the few that can be used to take old Hi8, VCR's, Turntables and any other medium that can be interfaced with the Sony Cord that can be used to input video and audio and send it directly to a Mac or PC via Firewire. Works like one of those interfaces you buy at the Apple Store. Just hook up your old source (RCA, S-VHS) to the side jacks on the Camcorder, then hook up the firewirecable to the computer and it works straight away. Nice if you have old tapes you want to remaster through Final Cut or iMovie. Make MP4's with Quick Time and music can be inputted to iTunes. Nice Solution as a part of a camcorder.

This fault is often caused by a failing flat cable that connects the LCD panel and the rest of the camera. In its early stages it is possible to get the buttons on the touch panel to work by carefuly changing the angle of the LCD panel while trying out the buttons until you get a position where they work.
When the flat cable gets worse , the picture on the LCD panel will start deteriorating and go off altogether.
At this stage you may consider having the flat cable replaced

There is flexible wire between LCD board and camera main board that seems cracked, thats why touch screen buttons does not work.
Replace that flexible wire.

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)

This Camcorderdoes not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use ani.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port isalso called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shapedconnector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend onthe i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pini.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you mayhave to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Computer.

Refer this link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE:Asthe Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it isnot required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video tothe Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sonyto transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer usingthe i.LINK/Firewire interface.

Applicable for Windows XP Operating System:

If youare using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USBStreaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk withthe Computer.

Check this link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C222820

If you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may be corrected by fast-forwarding the tape for a few seconds and then rewinding it back to the point where the issue first started. However, if the issue continues, this could be a sign that the video heads are dirty and need to be cleaned. Use a Sony MiniDV head-cleaning cassette (DVM-12CLD) to clean the video heads.
If the movie continues to stop at the same point even after cleaning the video heads, this could be an indication that there is a problem with the recording on the cassette tape. If this is the case, the data on that portion of the tape cannot be recovered.
NOTES:
  • It is recommended that a high-quality Sony MiniDV tape be used for recording.
