This is usually caused by a defective CCD image sensor or a defective audio/video drum and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it’s not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I’m a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I’m semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

First, if the battery was connected to the unit for all of that time it is D-E-A-D. Use the AC charger for power with the battery disconnected if necessary--if everything works, its the battery. The problem is not CCD related at all if you can get an image on either display(not on a playback mode), that immediately rules out the CCD--it provides for *all* displays. However, if you can view using the LCD screen, and still can't use the eyepiece, then there is an internal problem with the unit. Camcorders and cameras don't like to be be unused for long periods of time. Internal electronic components can become defective from lack of use. If you find that your camcorder needs repair, send it directly to a manufacturer repair facility--stores add their own "handling charge" by usually halving the repair quote and then adding that amount to the bill *you* see.

Hi there

Can you confirm that the battery is fully charged, or can you try recording with the power cord plugged in and see if that helps? Let me know.

If not, when you get a black screen, are you able ot browse the on-screen menus at all? Do they show up but only the recording image behind them doesn't? Let me know.

Or, do you get a completely black screen regardless of what you press?

You mention the flashing icon below the battery icon. Does it look like a boat? If so, this means that the backup battery (usually a button cell) is flat and requires replacing. This should solve the issue.

The backup battery is located behind a flap behind the actual large battery.

Best regards

This sounds bizarre I know, but I read another threat regarding Canon camcorders and tapes self ejecting. The advice was to ........ wait for it........ drop it onto a carpet floor from about 1/2m. My wife top me not to consider it. I continued reading and someone else had been successful using the technique. I have to report that it actually works. I dropped it (twice for good measure) and it loads tapes once again. Its true what they say, if in doubt....give it a clout!!!

There are 2 or 3 very small fuses on the main circuit board. These are commonly termed "Surface Mount" They are approximately 1- 1 and a 1/2mm long and only half the width. They are white on the face with a letter on them. These are fuses of which you can if you are very careful and with a fine tipped solder iron, replace.
To determine the faulty one, use a simple multi-meter and test for continuity across the fuses in turn. The fuse with an open circuit is faulty ie...does not read on the meter.
If you are silly enough to use a piece of fine wire to bridge the faulty fuse...then be it on your own hands...but remember, THE FUSE BLEW BECAUSE OF A FAULT and the wrong rated replacement could cause further failure if it is not able to "BLOW"

Hi.
Do you get an image come up on the tft screen or the viewfinder, when you put the 'corder in rec mode?

Hi.
The CCD has gone. It is about £30 from a canon dealer in London, and about £50-£75 to replace (labour)
So, is it good enough to have it done? I've done a couple now, only because they were both presents to the owners so did not want to throw them away!

Hope this helps
