HP DeskJet 648c InkJet Printer Questions & Answers
Printer not working properly
The DeskJet printers are notorious for this problem. When you turn the printer off and back on in the middle of a print job, it gets confused when it is back on and cannot interpret the print language when it resumes from the computer.
Whenever this happens in the future, you need to delete the print job off your pc before turning the printer back on. If you have windows XP, click START, SETTINGS, PRINTERS&FAXES, then double-click on your printer icon. When the queue window comes up, right-click on the active print job, select DELETE, then reply YES to confirm.
If you don't see the print job delete (it might take a minute or so), then you will have to stop/start your Windows print spooler. Go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL. Double-click the ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS icon. Double-click the SERVICES icon. Scroll down and locate PRINT SPOOLER. Right-click on it and select STOP. Wait about 10 seconds, then right-click on it again and select START. Close out of the SERVICES & CONTROL PANEL windows. Open your printer status window again and see if it is clear. Once it is clear, it will be safe to turn your printer back on.
Hope this helps.
I can't get my hpdeskjet
Remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and connect the Printer to be detected and installed. Check printer properties to see the ink levels.
Use head cleaning before a test is taken . It is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the command , can be an issue with ink drying , can also be poor ink cartridge contacts. If this wont get the printer working it can be fault in the printer's motherboard.

J6480 fatal error
you can try with installing the windows installer 4.5 and then try.. otherwise reinstalling windows might work because the error you are getting is related to installer.. and its a service of windows itself which is responsible for all the software installation..
How to print bothcsides of paper
You need to have a duplex unit installed. This is a wide plastic unit that replaces the flat access panel in the back of the printer. If you do not have one, it can't duplex. I don't have a picture, but it looks like a rounded rectangle about 6x6x10 inches with 2 large oval buttons, one on each side that release it from the unit.
What type of ink is needed for an HP 648c printer?
Here you go old chap:
http://www.officemax.com/catalog/search.jsp?model_number=DeskJet%20648C&itSearch=true&brandId=rfbrand965
or you can go bring in your old cartridge and save some coin by having them refill it for you.
Cheers
No power light comes on
Cleaning the print shaft:
1. This is a round shaft that runs through the ink carrier.
2. Lift the cover as in replacing ink cartridges
3. Unplug the machine with the carrier out in the middle.
4. Move the carrier to the right and out of the way. You did the above
so you can move the carrier back and forth. Otherwise it is stuck to
the right over the purge unit.
5. Using a clean cloth wipe down
the print shaft. Move the carrier as needed to get it clean. I believe
the people on this site recommend tri-flow lubricant. But I have found
even three in one will work for awhile. Put a few drops on the shaft
after it is clean to lubricate the carrier. Make sure it moves back and
forth easily.
Cleaning the encoder:
1. While your inside clean the encoder strip. It is a plastic strip that is directly above the shaft you just cleaned.
2. You can use plain water or windex to wipe the plastic down both
sides moving the carrier out of the way so that you can get to all of
it. It will come off at the ends so try not to pull on it too hard.
What I do is pinch it between my fingers using a paper towel and water,
than lighty moving the towel left to right, wiping as I go, till I get
to the carrier. I than move the carrier to the left and continue
washing to the right. You may have to do this more than one time to get
it clean.
Cleaning the feed rolls:
1. The equipment is still turned off and the carrier is free.
2. Open the cover and remove the exit tray and any paper in the bottom
tray. Most trays just pull out. Some have a lever at the bottom. Not
sure on this model.
Look for the three large black or gray
rollers at the back where the paper goes in. You need to turn these
rollers and clean them. Water will clean them enough usually to do a
temp fix for paper jams. But to clean them right you need to use a
rubber cleaning fluid. What I use is Lacquer Thinner. But Fedron,
Rubber roller cleaning liquid from an electronic store and other things
will work.
3. You must take a small amount of your cleaning fluid
and apply it to a rag. Clean what you can see of the rubber than I
usually pull up on the roller and clean the next section. Note this is
against the direction that the machine turns but will not damage
anything on this machine. It is hard to do the turning as you are
actually turning the motor through an intermediate gear. It will turn.
When you have cleaned all the rollers all the way around than remove
all items you have used to clean the machine. Plug the machine back in
and let it go through its reset. Should be ready to print.
On your machine as the symptoms didn't sound like rollers you might try
just doing the first two things. Likely will fix the problem.
Prints slow
Check to see what quality you are printing in, all printers print slower in normal mode compared to fast or draft mode. When you go to print click on property and change the quality. This is normally a temporary fix to keep the settings you need to do the same thing inside the printers folder.
Printer
do you get an error message on the computer screen?if yes - what is that message....?
I am stating the various problem causes for the issue you have stated without even knowing if you do get an error message or not.it would get resolved if you try these steps correctly as mentioned. It should be due to one of these causes.
Cause ---The top cover of the printer is open.
Solution
1. Close the top cover of the printer.
2. Press the RESUME button.
Cause --Printer senses that there is paper being fed.
Solution
1. Press the RESUME button to feed the paper. Continue with the following steps, if the paper does not feed.

6. Make sure that nothing is stuck under the paper sensor (you can blow under the sensor to remove dust).
7. Close the top cover of the printer.
8. Turn the printer on.
9. Try printing again.
cause --The printer was waiting for you to insert paper and then did not print.
Solution
Press the RESUME button to eject the printed page into the OUT tray.
cause --Printer does not sense paper in paper tray.

2. If there is paper, remove the paper.
3. Make sure that the paper width and paper length adjusters are set for the correct paper size.
4. Load paper in the paper tray.
5. Press the RESUME button.
cause --The RESUME light blinks when the computer is restarted or turned on.
Solution ---This problem may occur when the printer is on before the computer is turned on or restarted. The printer should be turned on after the computer is turned on and turned off before the computer is turned off or shut down. Press the RESUME button to clear the printer and get it to the normal state.
cause--Printer detects a faulty, missing, incompatible, or improperly installed print cartridge.
Solution
1. Open the top cover of the printer. The RESUME light will flash until it is closed.
2. Pull the top of the cartridge towards you until the cartridge unsnaps from the cradle.
NOTE : Make sure not to touch the copper-colored contact tape on the back of the print cartridge.
3. Click here (bpa00585) (in English) to check that you have the correct cartridges.
4. If you have the correct cartridges, then pick up the black cartridge. Notice that it has an arrow on the top.
5. Hold the cartridge so the arrow on the top is pointing towards the printer.
6. Tilt the cartridge slightly towards you.
7. Keep the cartridge tilted slightly towards you as you insert the cartridge into the right cradle.
8. Push the cartridge firmly forward into an upright position. You will hear a click when the cartridge is firmly in place.
9. Pick up the color (called tri-color) cartridge. Notice that it has an arrow on the top.
10. Hold the cartridge so the arrow on the top is pointing towards the printer.
11. Tilt the cartridge slightly towards you.
12. Keep the cartridge tilted slightly towards you then insert the cartridge into the left cradle.
13. Push the cartridge firmly forward into an upright position.
14. Close the lid of the printer.
You will hear the sound of the cartridge cradle as it moves to the right side of the printer.
cause --The print cartridge contacts are dirty and the printer does not recognize the print cartridge.
Solution
1. Open the top cover of the printer.
2. Remove the print cartridges.
3. Clean the copper-colored contact points on the cartridges with a damp, lint-free cloth. (Distilled water is recommended. Tap water might contain contaminates that could damage the cartridge.)
NOTE: Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the silver-colored nozzle plate on the bottom of the cartridge.
4. Turn off the printer.
5. Unplug the power cord from the printer.
6. Clean the carriage contacts on the back wall of the ink cartridge carriage with a damp, lint-free cloth.
7. Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove the moisture from the contacts. If the carriage contacts show noticeable damage, have your printer serviced.
8. Plug in the power cord.
9. Try printing again.
