there might be a problem with the encoder: remove it, observe it closely with a magniying glass, and you have to see a vertical lines pattern all along the enconder, without no blurs or missing or erased parts on it. Try to clean it with alcohol and a cloth but be careful no to erase the patterns i described early. If there are missing lines in the pattern you'll need to replace.
What is the encoder? a strip of semitransparent plastic that goes in the back of the cartridge carriage.

HP 1220C PRINTER FEEDS TWO SHEETS INSTEAD OF ONE
As far as I know this printers parts are no longer available(that depends in what region you are....ie country). I don't believe that the rear assembly is the fault. check your paper... it could be damp. this might sound strange but, the paper tends to stick together when it's damp. Fan the paper before putting it into the paper tray.
Good Luck
My cartridge light wont go off even when
there might be a problem with the cartridges carriage, find a new one and replace it because generally it can't be fixed. You can also buy a second hand HP DJ series 900 cartridge carriage, it's exactly the same piece ant it's 100% compatible.
Anyways, there's always a slight chance to fix it without buying another one: with a small clothe (or cotton bud) impregnated in alcohol, cleanse the cartridge carriage on its inside, specially in the copper tips that makes contact with the ink cartidge. It might solve the problem, but it isn't a flawless technique
I hooked up my 9 year old HP DeskJet 1220 C PS to
