look at the back of your two wire modem, you would find a 10 digit number that would be the default password, try it out, or else you need to login to your modem setup page to get the wireless settings, contact 2 wire they would help you to login and get the wireless settings

if all the lights on the modem are Green then it means there's no prob with the hardware. just make sure that you're going to use the right WEP key or wireless password. the network name is 2wirexxx, the X is the the last 3 numbers of the SN which can be found on the bottom of your 2wire 2701HG-B.make sure that your wireless switch is also turned on of course. the wireless light on the modem will lit if it is connected

2wire gateway

I think I have a power source problem. I now have two 2wire modems that have the same problem. All of the ethernet lights, the power light, and the wireless light stay on but the dsl and internet do not. I have unplugged, reset, and banged my head on the desk. Any suggestions?

The modem is a Gateway 2Wire model 2701HG-D. Its function is to handle the high frequency data carrier that rides on top of your ordinary telephone wires to provide internet access. It has four ethernet ports and one USB port in addition to the telephone connector. QWest has said there have been problems with it and they recommend that you purchase a newer model for $100.

Ours failed yesterday with a bunch of green lamps glowing steadily without the normal blinking. The lady was about to go downtown to purchase a replacement when I figured out how to open the box with its four springy plastic bending tabs that you can see looking through the cooling apertures.

What I found was an internal operating voltage of about 4 volts which was well below the 5.1V printed on the power brick. When I ran the modem from a laboratory grade 5 volt source it seemed to work drawing about 1 ampere without any connection to the phone line.

Measuring the 5 volt supply that came with the modem I saw 5.2 volts but when loading it to 100 milliamps or so it dropped to 4 volts. It was definitely out of spec. Replacing the brick with another brand rated at 5 volts, 2.2 amperes solved the whole problem.

A failing power supply usually turns itself off but in this case measuring its output with a voltmeter would result in a conclusion that it was OK. Not so. You have to measure it under load which is a bit harder to do.

So. . . Don't rush to buy that new modem the way QWest says. Consider a replacement power brick. Positive 5 volts on the center of the connector with 2 amp capability. The original power converter used a three pin grounding plug for the AC source and the ground was connected to the negative side of the DC output. That's not normally done and does not seem to be necessary. It would make more sense to connect to the telephone company ground but that wire may not be available in the 6 pin telco socket.

Part numbers on the failed power brick

P/N 1000-500031-000
Part No GPUSW0512000GD1S
Input 100-120Vc.a 50/60Hz 0,15A
Output 5.1V DC 2A
Class 2 Power Unit
Made in China

And. . . after cracking the shell of the power brick the input aluminum electrolytic capacitor showed typical deformation of the round aluminum end. That kind of failure is very much a part of my life these days. Sigh.

Hi,

If you are att customer, you will be charged $60 only if there is problem inside your premises, otherwise they wont charge you.

Is there any phone connected with your DSL line? if so is it working? if its not working, contact customer support and tell them its not working

If the phone is working, you have to check the connections between the phone line to the modem. As the DSL light is blinking red, its the problem with line and not the modem.

Take care

2wire 2701HGV-W Gateway wi-fi modem

How do I connect a printer to this modem so that I can communicate with it from my computers wirelessly via the wi-fi modem?

The 8200 by itself does not have networking capability.
This means that you cannot connect it directly to your router and give it an IP address, so others can connect to it.

The good thing is, that this printer is listed on the list for compatibility for upgrade with the wireless network kit (see here). The bad thing is - this kit costs about 70$ (see here).

A solution which does not cost anything, is to share the printer from your computer with the other computers. The downside is that the machine to which the printer is connected has to be running in order to let the others print.

If you decide to buy the Networking Kit - here are the setup instructions.

Sorry - but there is no simple (plug & pray) solution.

This is a little tricky technically it your printer isn't made to go onto the network, but you and do one of to things... let me start with the most cost effective way and that is

1. Hook your Printer up to a computer that is already on the network and then go into windows and SHARE that printer giving access to all the computers to print to it that you need to. I don't know what Operating System you have so your going to have to give more information to get clarification on exactly what you need to do in the Operating System to share the printer. The CONS of this approach is that you can only print to that printer when that computer is on. So if you want to have continuous ability to print to that printer you will have to keep your computer on.

2. You can get what they call a Print Server... and connect it to your printer and your network.. turning your printer into a network printer. Of course you might need to get more detail depending on what Print Server you choose. The Cons of this approach is that ofcourse your going to have to buy more equipment... but the pro's are you won't have to keep other computers on in the network to print to it. One last note you will find Print Servers in the store where you find Routers and Hubs.

The best of luck to you... and I hope this Helps... after you decide which way you want to go you might want to contact me or one of the other techs to get more percise approaches to installing your equipment... but we will need to know you Operating System, and the Print Server... if you go that route. Good Luck! I hope this works for you!!!

Sincerely,

How to change the username and password on 2wire 2701 dsl modem?

Hi,

We have changed ISP's and have been given a 2wire dsl 2701 wireless modem/router.
We want to change the username and password so that we can configure the modem to work with our new ISP.

Any ideas on how to do this? I have not used the modem before so have no driver software installed for it either.

Any help would be great.

Thank you in advance!

assuming that you are using PPPoE, just do the reset on the back of the modem.
Once it restarts, do the setup and sellect PPPoE to enter user and password.

RED POWER LIGHT ON 2WIRE 2701HG-B

I've noticed that a lot of these modems actually start to have a red power light after a while.

SOLUTION:
- Replace the power adapter. It doesn't necessarily have to be a 2Wire Power Adapter, it just has to have the same specs. (5.1V DC)

My DSL 2wire modem always blink like crazy.

My DSL 2wire modem model 2701HG-B is always blinking like crazy in red and green whenever I start downloading something. The power button is always solid green and when I start downloading something the wireless will start blinking in green and the DSL button will start blinking in red. After couple of seconds it will go back to solid green, but not long after it goes back to normal it will starts blinking again. When it starts blinking the page "The Broadband Link Is Currently Not Available" will appear, I will have three different options to pick from either reboot system/technician detail or check connection. I tried all and none helped, I also went to att.com to chat with the technician and a technician came to my house and check my modem. But he said that my modem's working fine. Sometimes when I closed all my downloading softwares the modem will blink too and I will be temporarily kicked offline. This had happened since I got my new computer which is a desktop computer, Windows7, 2 weeks ago. The softwares I use to download things is called Thunder and the software I use to watch movie online is called PPStream. PPStream is a Chinese software that first connect to their main site and starts downloading the movie then you will be able to view the movie. I have to stay online while the movie's playing because is not completely download into my computer. I really hope to fix this problem before school starts. Please help me!

DSL light blinking green/red indicates you do not have a solid connection to your DSL signal. Typically this can be anything from the connections at your home all the way to the connections with your ISP. As I do tech support for this model of 2wire modem all day long here is what I would tell you to do if you were calling me:

Are you using the proper length of phone cord (15ft or less): people sometimes have a longer phone cord in use and while it MAY work for a while outside conditions will effect the DSL signal enough that it no longer cuts the mustard. The longer the phone cord the more resistance a signal has in reaching the modem.

Filters: Typically the 2wire modem comes with 3 1-way filters and a single 2-way filter. Often people put the wrong filter on the modem, which doesn't even require one, or they put the correct filter (2-way filter) but hook it up to the wrong end (that is to say it should be connected to the DSL side of the filter). All other devices in the house such as phones, fax machines, Tivos, DVRs, Sat TVs, and monitored alarm systems (AKA anything ELSE connecting to/using the phone system) should be on filters.

Phone service: Do you have phone service? Do you have a dial tone or static? If so all problems with phone service will effect your DSL service as that is how the DSL service is piped into your home...that is to say through the phone line. Do not contact your ISP for this problem as it is a phone line problem creating your internet problem.

Phone jack location: Have you tried moving the modem, it's power cord, and proper length phone cord to another jack? Granted the argument that "it worked yesterday, so it should work today" is a strong one but sometimes putting the modem on another jack JUST to test out any potential wiring problems is a helpful one and could save you a lot of frustration. If one jack gives you red/green DSL lights and the other gives you solid green...that should speak for itself.

ISP provider: IS your service turned on? It may be a bit...hmmm...how shall we say....obvious but if your service has been turned off, or not even turned on yet, then that would be why. In addition, if the above does not help in determining what the problem is, a technician may need to be dispatched to determine where the fault lies. Sometimes it's the box down the road and sometimes it's a few miles away.
