This problem appears when the user installing Windows xp SP1 .. so u have to install windows xp pro SP2 .. and then u will need to install the drivers if u don't have the CD driver :

A lot of laptop Serial ports DO NOT have the right connections in the Socket. you may need to try a USB to serial dongle. But this is a real problem unfortunately. You need to find out the exact wiring of the serial port in laptop, and check against connections needed for your interface, and perhaps wire up a cable accordingly. Or maybe try a Nul-modem

In order to do this you would need to do a live chat so we could identify you and know the computer is not stolen or you can take it to a computer shop where they can get an ID from you. Sorry if it was stolen you would not like it if we gave a way to get into your finances.

You friend could be right and you may need to disassemble the laptop screen to check on the inverter cable.

But there is one more thing i would check on first before coming to that conclusion.

There is a slight possibility that it could be the display/video driver that are corrupt.

Boot the machine into safe mode by restarting the computer and repeatedly press the F8 key as it starts. This should bring up a sub menu with safe mode at the top. Use the cursor keys to highlight safe mode and press enter.
You will see white boot information scroll up the screen, be patient and wait for it to load up.
Click on your account and you will see a message about system restore. You don't want to use system restore so click on yes to work in safe mode.

Right click on My Computer/Computer and click on manage from the list. Then select Device Manager.

Look in the list for display adapters and click on the + or > next to to expand the list. Right click on the display adapter and select uninstall.

Restart the computer and it should load up the operating system and reinstall the drivers for the display.

If it won't start/display in safe mode then your friend has hit the nail on the head and it's a faulty inverter or loose inverter cable.

If you can not get any video from the VGA port or on screen I would suggest having a repair center quote you on Replacing your motherboard. The GPU is out on that unit from the sounds of it. These laptops heat up very badly and unfortunately most manufacturers do not have cooling in place for these chips. This causes the excessive heat to damage the leads on the solder joints causing issues like yours. If you are getting all your lights during boot and no screen, try contacting the manufacturer to see if they have any extended warranty if this unit is not under a warranty anymore. but if that does not work, find a company that will be willing to REFLOW your GPU chip onboard, usually runs about 80-130 bucks on Ebay.

If you see a very dim image or black screen or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

if u r using the connector make sure none of the pins are not bent if u r not make sure the bios settings are correct if this does not work either it must be the battery needs replacing.(the keyboard uses a battery read the manual)

If you have already tried the usual brightness and contrast controls, the problem most likely is a bad inverter. You can find an inverter for around 10.00 on ebay.

can you access any login? if so you go to the command prompt type
net user (user id to be changed) *
then press enter and you will be prompted to enter a new password twice.

This is if the account you log into does not have admin prvilieges which you could then just just right click on my computer select manage> select local users and group> then users> right click on the user and reset their password there.

You can also use winternals erd to reset the password if you can get a copy of it. May GOD bless the developer of that truly an IT life saver.
