Can i put a more recent Mobo as mine seems to be

Laptop hardware is very proprietary and specific to each system.

To replace the motherboard, you would need the same model as the one you currently have in order to fit the laptop and have your OS recognize your motherboard.

Stiffy drive don't respond and DVD Rom spin but don't read CD.

Try different discs to determine whether it's the disc or the drive. If it's the drive the the lens on drive might be dirty, try cleaning it with proper "Cleaning CD" if that doesn't help the drive it self might be going out (as in the mechanical parts on the drive). In the later case the only solution is buy a new drive.

Power problems

If you have a spare ac adapter, try that just to check if it's the ac adapter.

When you power it on, are there any lights on the notebook?
If there are lights, it is indicating that the computer is receiving power but is not able to go through POST ( power on self test ) and normally it's the mainboard that has the problem.

Either way, if there's no lights, it is also the mainboard that is the main cause.

The notebook will have to be sent in for repairs or just replace the motherboard.

My computer will not restart

It sounds like a hard drive crash but hopefully just one of the core files. If you get to another computer with a CD burner, download a copy of the "Ultimate Boot Disk" (find on Google - it's free) and start the laptop with that disk - you can then use the drive utilities to test the hard drive.

Fixing graphic drivers for an amilo m 1405 laptop

Reformatting is good only if your system commited a severe damage on it, however if the system is still good and only minimal errors and you think it can be fixed ..so why don't you fix it. its more chalenging than reformatting.

In reformatting you lose important files to backup is very risky. so fix it.
