You may just have to buy a new battery. Over time, the battery will hold less of a charge and eventually will not recharge at all to any useable level.

If you're lucky, your local camera store might be able to order one in. If you're not (since it's a fairly old camera, so far as the technology world is concerned), you may have to replace the camera.

Whether you get a new battery or a new charger, do not charge it right away.

Use it until the battery is completely dead, and then charge it. If you continue to only charge it when it is completely dead, you will extend the life of your battery.

remove the memory stick, you should be able to see the backend of the stick, push it in and it will pop out. after removing the stick try operating the camera again.

Due to ccd imager chip failure in DC-F717 camera, you do not get live view to take pictures in LCD and view finder. CCD imager chip will be replaced to correct that problem, Sony offers free of cost repair for same problem in this model. Click Sony CCD Imager Support for details.

Sounds like the CCD is damaged. Sony was fixing this problem free of charge but has since discontinued the free repair. If your camera was exposed to excessive heat, such as in a car during the summer, the CCD could be damaged from an iodine vapor within the camera itself.

Here's a website that has a few photos showing some distorted images from a bad CCD.

http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

The Sony websites that listed information regarding the free repair are no longer available.

I know this doesn't help your situation but if you can obtain a new CCD from Sony parts or similar, there's a YouTube video showing someone replacing one in under 10 minutes.

I may have a partial solution but I have to ask a question before answering yours. Is the problem occurring when the camera is in auto-focus or manual focus? To reset the camera to factory settings, open the battery door and, using a pointed object, press the small button marked reset.

To download a .pdf version of the user manual, go to the Sony website below:

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCF717revision.pdf

I did notice an article that mentioned a problem with the AF (auto focus) assist. I believe you can contact support on the Sony website to check for this particular problem.

If you are receiving C 1301 Error Memory stick error.
First clean the contacts on the memory stick with a pencil eraser Reinstall if no check the slot in the camera for debris paper etc... blow it out with a can of air If no Reset the camera with the button below the mem stick housing it says reset, use a paper clip if no cycle the camera by removing the battery and turn on and off If no and seriously here turn the camera on with the memory stick installed tap the camera into the palm of your hand give it a light jolt on all four sides cycle the on off of the camera between taps. Wacky but it will clear this error code.

Sony DSC F717s manufactured from 2002 to 2004 had a CCD chip with an epoxy base that gave off a gas vapor if overheated (eg in a hot car in summer). Sony was replacing these faulty CCDs with a new one on a ceramic base, however, this free repair program has been discontinued by Sony.

The above link will take you to a web page by Imaging Resources explaining the problem they found. It has some photos of an LCD displaying a view from an affected camera. This is no solution for you, rather a diagnosis. There is a YouTube video showing someone replacing one of these faulty CCDs. It's less than 10 minutes, real time.

Sollution for all these things is to reformat the chip. YOU DONT NEED A SPECIAL PROGRAM. My camera unfortunately has no firmware with a format option, so i tried the Windows ones to let this thing run. And it worked after these MAGIC WORDS: format y: /FS:FAT /A:8192 the y: is the driveletter for the chip in your pc and the important word is /A:8192 -- means that the clustersize on the chip has to be 8kB. The standart format in windows is using 512b clusters on a chip with these sizes.

Your respose is highly appreciated.

Arjun

Your LCD is only a small preview screen. I have on many occasions tested a camera and viewed on the screen. When you view the image on a computer it is enlarged to a much larger image. If your pictures appear out of focus you may have a bad lens. Set your camera to the highest mega pixel rate and retake some test images. If these are blurred you have a bad lens.
