I read on a forum that you can reset the shutter by gently hitting the camera at the bottom with the heel of your hand. This does actually work for me whereas the removal of the battery etc. as advised by Canon didn't do anything.
I have had the problem for a few days now, occurring about once a day. These few days have been quite heavy shooting days, about 500 shots a day. It seems to happen more or less first thing in the morning and, once I have freed it by the method above, it behaves for the rest of the day. However I feel that it will probably get worse and fail altogether eventually so I am still looking for a better solution.

You probably have a dead cell in your replacement battery. Camera batteries have a limited number of charge cycles, and this is not a rare issue with "aged" batteries. Also, when you get a new battery, buy a genuine Canon replacement and not one of the el-cheapo Chinese copies available online. In camera batteries, you really do get the quality and performance you pay for!

As it is a Sunpak tripod, contact the mfr or importer, or look on eBay. Fixya does not supply spares for any equipment.

Rewind the film and try 'dry-firing' the camera, checking to see if the lens is working properly. May be a bad contact between the lens and the body, may just the the film has loaded slightly on the huh.

You should download a manual.

Specs say it is an autofocus and autoexposure camera with limited manual input required.

Camera store may be able to supply you with a new one or write to Bogen and ask for a replacement.

The PC1565 is better known as the Canon Power Shot S95.

The manual is located here: http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/4/0300003994/01/PSS95_CUG_EN.pdf

Refer to page 28 for details on erasing pictures.

Hope that helps,

You are not mentioning what Canon model, so we would be at a loss to assist you. There may be a way to do a factory reset on your camera, check the manual. In your question you state "...slr...", that indicates a film camera. Also, you say you added a memory card, that indicates a DSLR. If a factory reset that does not work call Canon:
1-800-652-2666). Monday-Friday: 8:00 am to 12:00 am, Saturday: 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. All times ET, excluding holidays

Sounds as if the interlock between film advance and shutter mechanism may need looking at. Repair shop job, I'm afraid.

If this is a EOS 30D, fist I would try is a fresh battery. If that does not help, then it may well be the camera as designed. If it had been brighter now less bright, call Canon for service options:
1 (800) 652-2666

First, be sure you've pushed the film release button (usually located on the bottom of older film cameras) and then try rewinding. If the film is stuck on the take-up reel of your camera your best bet is to manually unwind the film from the reel and see if it will work properly again. If not then it wasn't a film problem but a mechanical one on the reel.
