Canon PowerShot S500 IXUS 500 Digital Camera - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
I have a Canon Digital
At 5 yrs old, it probably isn't worth trying to repair. There are so many newer products on the market with improved functions. Missing important shots makes it worthwhile to find a unit that works.
Buttons locked
I had the same problem. After e-mailing customer service and finding no help, I took the case off the camera and traced the wiring from the buttons to the circuit board. I unplugged the wires from the circuit board and plugged them back in. Everything is working like new! You'll need a small screwdriver set and something to keep your screws in. They are tiny and easy to lose.
Uploading pictures
I use a standalone cardreader, that i plug via USB to my computer. This solution works very fine.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Windows Photo Gallery or
Picasa.

How do I load photo disk to my pc?
If you mean photos stored on a 31/2 inch floppy disk and your laptop does not have a 31/2 inch floppy drive, then borrow a cpmputer that has a 31/2 inch floppy drive, copy the photos from these disks to an USB memory stick so you can then copy them to your computer. ORYou maybe able to get your friend or computer shop to fransfer photos from your disks to a USB memory stick or burn then to a CD or DVD disc and you can then copy them to your computer.
Re Canon IXUS 500. When I take a picture it looks ok in screen at time of taking. When the review pic comes up it is covered by white horizontal lines. Anyone help?
I think you'll be pleased. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager, and is a known defect for your particular model camera.. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free if you live in the US, Canada, and a select few other countries. If you live outside the US, contact Canon support for your country to see if they'll still honor the advisory (some still will, especially if you stress you knowledge that this is a known defect of the camera). They may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status, and you don't need a receipt. You could have bought the camera from eBay used, Canon would still fix it free (great company)!
Please see this link for more info. Please note that for the S500, you need to act before January 31 2012, as after that date Canon is planning to phase out the free repair for the S500.
I bought two new 8GB
If your camera is the type that uses SD cards, then your problem is that the camera was developed in 2004 before SDHC cards were invented. Your camera cannot use them.

It's very difficult to troubleshoot software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place? Please
see this article, as it describes the use of a USB card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. Note that card readers are also VERY inexpensive these days (some places less than $2 online with shipping). Just make sure that in your search that you find one that's stated capable of reading the CF card for your camera (many are just SD/SDHC, but good CF card readers do exist.
Here's one example from Amazon).
