Most routers will 'factory reset' if you hold the reset button for 10-15 seconds

If you are on DSL you risk losing internet connection if the router is handling the PPPOE login. The way to tell usually, is that the DSL modem will have an 'internet' light lit up along with the power, dsl, ethernet indicator lights. If the internet light is NOT illuminated on your modem when you get online, don't reset the router until you are sure what your PPPOE login credentials are

If you are on Cable, this won't be a problem at all

It wireless adapter could be faulty or the PCI slot in the computer is faulty.
Insert the D-Link into another PCI slot and also try installing the drivers again, the driver may be corrupted.
Try installing the D-Link in another computer, if it doesn't work then it is faulty and you need a replacement wireless adapter.

what is an acceptable signal strength. I'm running between 50 and 60 percent

Go to a DOS prompt. Type Ping sony.com. If you get a reply, then your network is good and your internet explorer is either hijacked by a virus or misconfiguered. Go to Start, all programs, accessories, system tools and select Internet Expolorer with no add-ons. If this works and you get a Web page then one of your add-ons is defective. (Turn off Yahoo first). If this doesn't work get a friend to download you a copy of Dr Web and go fight viruses.

The card could be bad. I've found over the years that most of these desktop wireless cards work best when the software is installed before the card is installed. Meaning uninstall all the software. Turn off the machine. Remove the wireless card. Turn back on the machine. Install the software. Once installed, shut down the machine. Install the card. Turn back on the machine and lets Windows find the card and the software.

I'm assuming you're in USA. The FCC may be limiting the frequency range that the card can use.  Check out drivers for other locations to see if that helps.  Also see if you have current drivers.
