The screen should tell witch F key to press while booting. Watch for it and restart. It should be something like F2, F9, F10 and so on.

In case of your Toshiba laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper and I wouldn't recommend doing it especially if it's under warranty.

More likely you will have to tear down the laptop to get to the CPU fan. If you have never torn apart a laptop I suggest you take it to a local repair shop.

You may have a faulty ballast unit. They are fairly cheap on ebay and easy to fit. Just unscrew the four screws holding the bezel on to the screen and it is there, under the screen.
Hope that helps.

May be its system files got corrupted. Make sure you've enabled the boot up from hard drive and make it first in the boot options.

If you need to know how to install from XP boot up CD, here is the link : http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/bootcddvd.htm

Hope it worked. Thanks and All the best.

ok, a modem on COM8 ? Normally modems are on COM1, COM3. You need to fix that problem first. Most softwares are not setup to scan that high for the modem. (ps: COM2, COM4 are usually for other devices - in the old days, mice were on COM2). Follow instructions:

START
CONTROL PANEL
PHONE/MODEMS
Click over to MODEMS
Click on Proper MODEM
PROPERTIES
ADVANCED
ADVANCED MODEM SETTINGS
Change COM8 port to COM3
click OK, probably going to have to restart computer.

Let's see if this actually solves the issue. if it did not and you need more help, contact me through this site and we will proceed forward.

sounds like you have an intermittent problem with your AC adaptor or dc input jack. Does the light on the AC adaptor light up when you plug it in? If it does then your dc input jack may be faulty. If the light on the ac adaptor does not light then replace the ac adaptor. Good Luck!
