02 errors usually refer to configuration card issues. I couldn't find anything on the 540 can you verify that's the complete error code.

My 8550 is stuck initializing
If the machine has a stick of ram clipped onto the main board then i would suspect it has gone faulty. That usually stops a xerox from booting. Try another stick of ram.
Xerox 8550 Code 02,008.67:164321
This fault code is saying that the configuration card is missing.
If you are not sure what it is, the configuration card is the
'SIM' like card that slots into the side of the printer where the power
cable connects. If the card is present, turn the printer off,
remove the configuration card and try wiping with a soft dry cloth
and re-inserting. Try to prepare beforehand and keep the printer off
for a minute or less as this will avoid you having to go through a
cleaning cycle when rebooting the printer.

Display panel dim
You can call 1-800-835-6100 and they will send you a new display. There is a known problem with those on that machine.
My xerox phaser 8550 has,
On the control panel, select Troubleshooting, and then press the OK button.
Select Print Quality Problems, and then press the OK button.
Select Remove Print Smears, and then press the OK button. The printer cleans the
ink from the rollers by running several sheets of paper through the printer. Repeat
Step 2 up to three times if the smears continue to appear.
Intermittent paper jams
Take your paper tray out, and open the paper path door.
Take a soapy cleaner and some alcohol and clean every roller you can see. The gray rubber ones espicially.
If that doesnt cure it, then most likely the registration clutch should be replaced.
Bad streaking on print xerox 8550 phaser
The best way to tell if your problem is clogged jets, or bad maintenance kit, or something blocking jets. Is to look at light stripes test, and see if missing jets are all in a straight row or all over the place. If the missing jets number less that 10 you can use jet substitution to avoid the streaks. If you are using Media Sciences or some other after market ink, check that most of your problems are not in the cyan area. Media Sciences produced a bad batch of cyan which clogged the jets pretty bad. The good news is that if their ink caused the problem they will pay for some one to come out and replace your printhead. If you LST (Light stripes test) has a smear the entire vertical lenght of the page. You have either a bad maintenance kit, or a piece of paper, lable etc..rubbing against the drum while printing
