I can't restore pc formatted external hard drive back to Mac use

You probably formatted your harddrive in NTFS. NTFS is a so called "file system", but it is designed by microsoft, it only works on microsoft systems and on some linux distributions. However it is not compatible with mac.
So what now? You can go and find software that makes your mac ntfs compatible, or you could backup the files on a windows computer, format your drive in FAT32 and copy the files back to the drive. Take a look at this: http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/ That should make your mac NTFS compatible.
good luck!

That's because there is no software for it. It's a mass storage device and should be seen by your computer as such.

Hi

You need to run the Disk utility and format the drive first.

You will find disk utility in the applications folder then the utilities folder if I remember right.

Format the drive, make sure its set on the MAC OS setting, journaled if I remember right.

It should work after that, all content in the drive is lost if any is there.

I have a HDD 80 GB Iomega external hard drive that

For the most part the drive is done - click of death at startup is a bad thing. There are times that you can power the drive on and off a few times and will be able to pull some of the data off the drive but it will not work for long. Replacement drives in teh 1 TB size are as low as 50 dollars on a popular auction site.

If the data on the drive is vitally important and not backed up on another media, there are services that will retrieve the data off the drive or rebuild the drive saving as much data as they can. The one that comes to mind is located in CA. Let me know if this is something your interested in and I can get his contact information to you
