ON TURN ON THE FAN STARTS UP THEN SHUTS DOWN, DISC LED ON SOLID
This sounds like an overheat problem. Check that the cpu cooling fan is not clogged with dirt, if it is you can agitate the dust with an old dry paint brush and hoover it out carefully. Does everything else appear to run normally before it shuts down?

BIOS CHECKSUM ERROR
Normally a bios checksum error is caused by a dead cmos battery. In a laptop that can be a pain - some are specialty batteries, some soldered directly to the motherboard, etc.
Start the laptop and enter the bois, there usually will be something to tell you what key to press, most of the time it is f2 or f10. Once in the bios set the date, time and boot order, then save and exit the bios. If it boots ok then try to determine what type of battery and it's location on the laptop to replace it.
If you let me know the make and model of laptop I will try to help determine that info and also where you can get the battery. That will more than likely be from eBay....
Hope this helps
