1st ? yes you can store music to it and no you don't need any fancy software to transfer your music to the device just try these methods
**Drag and Drop**
Connect your MP3 player to the computer. Some MP3 players connect directly to a USB port, while others connect to a USB port by way of a specific USB connector that comes with the MP3 player. Open the folder on the computer that contains the music files you want to transfer. This is usually the "My Music" folder, available from the "Start" menu, but it can be any folder where you save your music files. Scroll down to the song you want to transfer to the MP3 player. Right-click on the title. When the options are displayed, click on "Send To." Scroll down the "Send To" options and select your MP3 player. This can be listed as your MP3 player's name or as "Removable Drive." Click on this selection. Continue this process until you have transferred all songs that you want to your MP3 player.
--**Windows Media Player**--
If you have a large playlist to transfer, you may prefer to do it from your media player, such as Windows Media Player. Once your MP3 player is connected to the computer, open Windows Media Player. Click on the "Sync Music" tab. Drag songs that you want from your Windows Media Library over to the "Sync Music" column to create a playlist. Click the "Begin Sync" tab at the bottom once you have all of the songs on your playlist. This action will sync all of the songs to your MP3 player with one click. Disconnect your device once songs have been transferred by clicking on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the bottom-right side of the desktop tray.

The only way to add playlists on this unit is to use your PC software to create them and then add to the unit later. you cannot create a playlist on the player itself.

you can use any music software to create and add. for instance, If you are using Sonys own Soundstage, follow these instructions:

Click "My Library"

Click "create/edit PLaylist"

Select the tracks you want from content shown on left. ( to select multiple tracks at once, hold CTRL key)

Select the "New Playlist" on right

The new playlist will be created. you can rename it now

click on large arrow pointing left

Now just import this folder to your player

you are done.

take the battery out of the player, then charge it without the battery! for just a minute, then disconnect it again, put the battery back inside and charge it again.

Hi,
The Software for tranferring the songs can be installed depending upon the Operating System installed in the Computer. Before installing the SonicStage Software in the Computer, install the SonicStage Security update. Click here to install the SonicStage Security update.

well, i dont have an NW-HD5 player, but an atrac ad, which is pretty similar, i think. i solved the same problem by putting out the battery, charge it just for a minute without! the battery and turned it on in the meantime, then unplug it, put the battery back inside, charge it again with battery and turn it on, NOT by pressing the "play"-button, but by pressing the "search-menu"-button. and i think now i always have to press the "search-menu"-button to turn it on, otherwise the same error will occure. well, good luck!
