I no longer record on a disc unless I'm going to fill it up at the same time.

it could be a region problem. most dvd players are locked on certain region areas..like America being Zone 1 and S.A being Zone 2. imported or diffirent format of dvd's usualy gives a disk error message. if you think it might be region try www.videohelp.com. they give hacks for region problems^^

Only if you're fully confident than do as follows:
Take all the unit appart, and remember that you're heading towards the lense. In absolutely all units CD and/or DVD laser is located just below the disk level and aside the spin motor in the centre. Laser itself is allways monted on a pair of slides. WARNING do not attempt to touch the lense itself as it migt dammage tha laser and no cleaning products going to help then. at the back side of the laser itself there should be tiny little component called potentiometer, its size might be from 2x2 up to 5x5 mm. It will be probably only component placed at the back side of laser and if not the only then definitely the biggest one. And that component does have tiny slot for + or - screwdriver. so carefully place the crewdriver in the position and turn CLOCKWISE by no more than 5-10 degrees. Now connect aeverything to one piece and give it a try. 99% it will work from the first time. although if t doesnt don't turn potentiometer to any side anymore just ad one drop of vegetable oil. DO NOT USE OLIVE OIL!. Now put everything back together and enjoy.

Please look at bottom area of remote control there you would notice DVD mode switch, set it to DVD-3 and remote will work with player.

It´s is easy to solve. Your DVD was seted to DVD1. Push enter button plus 1 no remote control.
Now you are able to commnad your DVD and go to System Menu and change to DVD3 again.
After it, don´t forget to backup your remoto control to DVD3. Push enter button plus 3

The method is the same as for TV channels; select the input (i.e. view the desired channel), then press the record button. AV1 and AV2 usually are at the end of the channel list, and can be found by pressing the channel UP or DOWN buttons.

Dvd players are only made to last a couple of years(the laser goes bad).If you play scratched disc's it won't last that long.Hopefully you didn't pay alot for the player,and if you did then you can get the laser repaired but its expensive.I usually wait until the things go on sale and pick one up for 20 or 30 dollars.When the laser burns out after repeated use I just buy a new one because fixing them is more expensive and unless you want to continue having problems its easier to buy new.These guys that put alot of money in these units are just wasting their money.

Please set / check your remote command mode and set it on default DVD3

It sounds as though the unit is actually recording a DVD, but is getting no incoming signal to record. What is your recording source? Satellite and receiver? Antenna? Cable box? In the set-up menu, be sure you have chosen the proper input source; i.e., recording from where? You may be able to access that menu through the Function button on the remote, AFter setting that menu, be sure to press Return to restore the recorder to the ready mode. If you are using the RF input for recording, be sure that is selected as well, as opposed to L1 or L2. The input channel must match the output channel on your receiver, usually channel 3 or four. What is the model number? 

I did the same thing and lost all remote control to the recorder. Try holding ENTER & 3 in unison for as long as it takes (30 secs or more ) to view change on TV screen. This should get u back to system menu where u can change back to dvd 3 (default ) If doesn't work get a one for all remote and enter code 0533 which will get u in to the recorder command lines. PS enter & 3 worked 4 me.

No, it is built in.However, AnyDVD software can correct that on a PC, and you can create a new copy from the original.

It may be a simple case of smudge, dirty, dusty laser lens. A bit of cleaning might only be needed. Pls try:
1. a can of compressed air to force out any out or foreign materials;
2. use a CD cleaner readily available from most computer stores/shops.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

ahh..it's called firmware, and its installed when built, or repaired..usually the chips are flashed with new information, when needed..

THESE UNITS HAVE SOFTWARE ISSUES. THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE IT FIXED, IF "IT IS THE SOFTWARE" IS TO HAVE IT SENT TO SONY FOR SOFTWARE UPGRADE. THE UNITS USE UNIX AND THE CODE IS NOT OPEN.
PER TO WHAT SONY SAYS YOU NEED TO.
Please send the unit to Sony Service Center for upgrade.
