If you have gone into the customer menu and red or blue are skewed and will NOT adjust in some direction you have a convergence circuit problem.

Simply put--this model uses two of the STK-392-560 Convergence IC chips. What needs to be done is both need to be replaced and the set then adjusted with the Sony Remote.

If you can solder and are handy you can buy a pair of the chips on Ebay for about 12 dollars plus shipping.

I can give you detailed instructions if you or someone you know can do the repair--most shops are going to get 300 or more for this repair--maybe not worth doing on a 43 inch set?

These are good sets and unlike the LCD or Plasma sets this is about the only problem they ever have.

The reason the chips fail is they have a metal back and are each bolted to a metal heatsink with fins to keep them cool--a white grease is applied to the back of each chip to quickly transfer heat--after some years the grease dries out and one of the chips fails.

Only two things are needed to do the repair--being able to get at the chips and being able to unsolder them, replace them and solder the new ones in.

I have helped dozens of average people here do repairs just like this......if you are able you can save the set and and a LOT OF MONEY.

I can tell you the best place to buy the chips and also tell you everything you will need to do the repair from start to finish.

I am in California and had someone 50 miles away call me with a similar problem in a Sony--he got the parts today and I stepped him and a friend of his through the fix over the phone for free--

Let me know if you need help or want to do it--I am here to help people.

If this helps you rate this solution as I do this here for free.

What sort of lines? - do you mean like it is in widescreen mode with a black band top and bottom? Do you mean you have clear straight lines, or streaks or scratch-like marks? Is it the same for all input sources (cable, DVD/VCR, satellite, PC, camcorder etc.? Could you post back a photo of the lines? Waiting your info:)

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D, wavy, or has a shadow or shadows
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.
