My big screen tv looks 3d and red green blue are

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

Picture intermittenly shifts and creates a shadow

Your convergence circuit is about to fail. It could be that the convergence IC's only need to be resoldered or maybe one of them has gotten intermittant. If you or someone you know has the expertise to identify and resolder them, that may fix your problems. If it doesn't then they will need to be replaced by a qualified service facility who can also reconverge the set after the repair is done.

Sony TV Error Code - Nine Blinks Solution.

Nine blinks of the standby light on any Sony TV indicates a problem on the "G" board. It is located on the left side of the unit looking from the rear. I seems that Sony sent out some sets with faulty diodes in them which fail at some point. They have corrected this and changed the part numbers on newer units. I listed that information below. You must have one of the older units. Do not resolder the diodes as the problem will return in short order.

Here is the error code explanation along with the repair procedure:

" Nine blinks - Replace D 6116 and D 6301 on the "G" board, do not resolder as this will only fix the problem temporarily. This could also be a Panel Module Error or Thermal Error but most likely the diodes. If it is an intermittent 9 blinks, meaning sometimes the TV comes on and other times you get flashing, then change the switching regulator on the "G" board or check connections. Make sure the regulator is -12 or -13 vdc(negative)."

The G board part number is A-1054-157-A. This board is no longer available from Sony. Rebuilt boards are available at http://www.moduslink/pts.com . The phone number is 1-800-844-7871 or you can go to their easy to use website and order a board. I have used them for years and have never had a bad board in fact their boards are probably better than factory. Certainly their warranty is (6 months).

Here are the diode part numbers and generic part numbers, and they can be purchased at www.partstore.com or www.encompass.com .

REF. NO. -SONY PART NO. - DESCP - GENERIC PART #
D6116 ----- 8-719-081-97----------DIODE --------MMDL914T1
------------------------------------------------------------No longer available

New part numbers:

D6116------ 8-719-074-43 -------- DIODE -------- BAS316-115
D6301------ 6-500-567-21--------- DIODE ------- 10ERB20-TB5

Remember, do not get cheap and only replace one diode at a time as you will still have the potential for failure. Also as I mentioned previously, resoldering will give you a temporary fix with the problem reappearing in a week or two.

This should solve your problem but I do know of one instance where a CRT (blue) was shorted out and caused this same problem, and the problem was not the G board.

To eliminate that issue remove the CRT boards one at a time (Blue, Green, Red) and turn the unit on with that color board removed. Of course remove power when unhooking the CRT board.

Continue doing this until all the boards are removed. If the set runs after removing any board, that CRT is bad and needs replaced. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4573850-change_crt_in_projection_tv which explains how to successfully change the CRT and where to get the parts. If the set never starts up the G board is most likely your problem and will need the diodes replaced.

This is all the info you will need to successfully repair your TV set. Good Luck and be very careful as there are lethal voltages inside the set.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Try connecting the TV directly to a different wall outlet and check. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service.

Will it be worth to hire a tech to fix the

You can adjust the convergence by press the flash focus button on the TV. If the issue persists, then try resetting the TV to the factory settings. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service. You can contact the service center and check for the cost of repair. It is just a small adjustment.

Can a ps3 cause problems for your tv

If the convergence is normal with VHF antenna or video input, convergence circuit is OK.

If convergence problem becomes visible when you switch to HD input, the convergence needs adjustment for that size or picture mode. Sony TV has different memory data for different size or format pictures.

If adjustment in the customer convergence adjust screen is not satisfactory, someone has to enter the service mode and adjust. Not recommended for rookies.

The game box or any other input will not damage or stress the TV if the game box is working normally.

If convergence is not correct in all size modes and can not be adjusted you need a repair to the convergence circuits.

Occasionally the convergence ICs are on the verge of failure from accumulated AC power bumps or lightning pulses on the AC line.

A small spark from poor grounding or static electricity can occur when connecting an input and the TV is powered on. Semiconductors (transistors, diodes and ICs) that have accumulated junction damage may fail when the effect of the arc is applied to the junction of the semiconductor.

The failures are often blamed on the Game or other external device. The TV would probably have failed in a short period of time with normal operation.

Turn off power to TVs and external devices when connecting or disconnecting video, audio or antennas. It is also important to use power sockets correctly. All electronic equipment has polarized plugs or 3 prong plugs to make sure the grounding is correct. Using multiple extension cords that are not grounded correctly or incorrect house wiring causes ground loops and unexpected problems. Best is a power bar with 3 prong plug in the wall.

How do I fix the convergance on a sony 57" rear

Get an ESR capicitor meter and check for dry or blown caps on the convergence board - replace the 2 convergence ICs (but ONLY do this if you are electronics qualified - or get a tech to do it). Clean the lenses of the tubes - these come completely apart and you can change the fluid too - usually this is a $250 per tube job (there are 3 tubes) for a tech but you can do this and replace the fluid yourself which will clean up the fuzzyness. Then reconverge and do the flash focus for all zooms (you may have to do this several times).

Here is a link too for the service manual which details how to converge your set - http://tv.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ws500/

My picture has faint blue horizontal wavy lines

manual convergence should fix the problem if it does not the set most likely either has a bulb burnt out or a bulbs power / focus needs to be adjusted by taking off the panel and finding a 6 screw control panel

...
...

should look like that 3 screws in a row on top of another three screws each of thees control the power and focus of each color this is a somewhat delicate process and is a huge pain on larger tvs that you cannot completely see the picture or color while you are directly under in front of it so I had my gf come in the room and sit across to let me know which color was doing what if you dont have someone you will need to check after each adjustment

now the diagnostic
as i said each screw controls a colors power and focus the focus is used if you see an outline of a color around pictures if everyone looks like a dead jedi with a blue aura around them the blue focus needs to be adjusted and so on for each color if you skies or blue screens seem feint your blue power probably needs to be turned up and so on for each color

if through the course of this you can see the bulbs and notice one is out your probably looking at dealing with the color issue until the time you can purchase a new tv as the cost of the bulb and the technician needed to install it as they are wired to a circuit board and requires technical knowledge and tools

hope this helped
