Hi,
If tv is working fine then suddenly screen becomes green and shows thin few retrace lines then tv shuts down/ off that shows problem of green picture tube that will be replaced.
Let me know if above symptoms are correct to proceed or post correct symptoms of tv to diagnose possible cause of problem.

This is a set with bad picture tubes-not available except on rebuild basis.

If it is a black box, check the menu under closed captions, look to see if TEXT is highlighted.

It can also come from a cable or sat box but the box should only show on some channels.

yes u have bad picture tube but is not the green is the red , the red picture tube id over voltege , thats way u had red picture ,

This a common problem with sony rear projections, You should start with the most common solution to repair before futher diagnostics or repair.

Model indicated uses two of the STK-392-560 convergence chips--see attached photos.

Both need to be replaced and set adjusted with remote--fairly easy if you are handy. Total parts cost will on EBAY be under 25 dollars.

CHIPS are located on other side of metal fins on heat sinks and should be STK-392-560--NUMBER WILL BE ON FRONT OF THEM.

This model uses two of the STK-392-560 CHIPS FOR CONVERGENCE. See attached photos.

Total parts cost for do it yourself on Ebay is under 25 dollars.

1 - the green light is the return beam from the green CRT - it should have been blocked; this happens when, because of old age, the polarisations of the tubes go off; the aged components must be replaced and the polarisations readjusted - a job for an experienced pro.
2 - the screen (if it's about it) has multiple layers - if one of them gets damaged then the entire screen is gone, it's impossible to fix it, it must be replaced. Find one here

I suggest you call local repair shops and see if they have replacement parts for that model. Sometimes you can get a good deal on a used mirror which is just as good as a new mirror. Your set was a very popular model so chances are good for finding replacement parts locally. Good luck, Russmann.

If you are saying it goes to a bright blue screen I can tell you what to try.

This model has a history of bad picture tubes--red,green and mostly blue.

The blue screen can be turned down and I can tell you how.

The way you will know if this is your problem is take the set to a unused video input--all you should see is video 1 etc in green; if you see blue with or without trace lines you have the problem.

Let me know what you find and if so I will tell you how to adjust the set manually to try to correct it.

Otherwise, it's a good idea to call Sony directly and explain the problem and see if there are any outstanding recalls on your model for this exact problem. This is what happened for me, and the entire panel was replaced free of charge. The link for their technical support is here:

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

• Screen looks 3D
• Colors don't line up
• One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
• Screen is bowed or warped.
• TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

How many times does the light on the front blink when it doesn't turn on? This will give you the diagnostic trouble code so that you can narrow down the exact problem. once I have that information I can assist you further.

No,any colors lines mis alignments.The tv convergence board parts are dead.The 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors are dead.These parts must be replace on the tv convergence board.To solveved convergence problems.The shop,will cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.

Blue CRT short p/n 873364935

It seems convergence output chips failure in your tv and convergence settingswont fix it, replace defective ICs to fix the issue.

Install the Sony Type 1 convergence repair kit available from www.tvrepairworld.com The kit contains the Parts and the CD with repair instructions.

It sounds like a bad crt on the red picture tube, but impossible to tell for sure w/out seeing it. These sony's have a lot of trouble w/ the tubes and crt's.That would be the first thing I would check. From the front of the set, you can gently tap the neck of the red pic. tube w/ the handle of a screwdriver while the set it on, and watch to see if the set flickers or if the red changes. You may want to let a tech take a look at it and give you an estimate. If this is the problem it will probably be fairly expensive to repair. You may be better off to get a new set.
